ea ponents coy 2s = Ot ee Fhe Daily Transcript, _MEVADA CITY, CALIFORMIA. ‘Wednesday, Dec. 24th, 1879 Tie Literary Associat fon. There was a good-sized and very tutelliyent’ audience of. ladies and gentlemen at the Baptist church Mohday evening. The musical and literary programme was one of unusual merit. Me. F.Elser’s clarionet _solo aul Ma. Dy Selim’s song each reveived au encore; ‘Master Robert Organ ‘delivered .a humorous recitatidn, and there were two quartettes. --one by Missés Annie Naffziger and N: Kimball;, Prof.’ Halleckand: Mr, . Webber; the other by Messrs: Brown, Halleck; Weber ant’ Selim-—and th3y were rendered in a finished manner. The leading feature of ‘the entertainment was the lecture entiiled‘‘Somersaults: of Enrotion”by Mr. J. Albert Wilson’of, New York. He began by’ thanking his large and erttical audiences beforehand for their kind attention, as he feared when he got thneugh there might not be many of them’there. He defined physical, mental and emotional somersaults, and classified human“emotion under three emotional signals—humor, s8atire, pathos, Hethen procéeded by means of mahy quaint anecdates from his own experience and . observations’ in. .‘different parts ‘of the world, to illustrate these various phases of emotion. ’ The lecture lasted about one hotr; and’for the whole of that’ timd’ he’ held. his audience in'rapt attensieni!: At every dozen setitences a ripple of laughter would begin at one end of the church, and flow in waves of merriment, until it} ended in a roar ‘at the other end. Gtay-headed nen were convulsed with langhter, and mothers and mbidens vied with each other in cachination. Yet the lecture was not all humor. There were very many passages replete with deep, thought, and every illustration, had its moral. As a humorist, ,Mr. Wilson will compare faverably with the best in America;.as.an orator he has few superiors. ~ a to — Amateur Dramatic Society. \ anand are being made to organize an amateur dramatic society in this city as soon as the excitement attendant on the Holidays has quieted. A number of ladies and géntlemeh who possess the talents nécessary to render the parts that may be assigned .them have already signified a. willingness to join the as’ sdeiation).and there are doubtless a nitmber of others who. will also extend their aid. Such plays as ‘‘Undér the Gaslight,” Streets of New York,” “Struck Oil,” ‘‘Woodcock’s Little Game,” ete., will probably be chosen for presentation, in case sufficent® encouragement is met with. Entirely new scenery willbe painted, . and the general manageinent will be in the hands of an experienced and competent party. The proceeds of the entertainmentaavall be devoted te worthy.ch ritable objects. Skipments of Gold. Last week the Citizens: Bank purchased in smalllots and shippea to the’ Bay the sum of $5,200. This was all'taken out by parties engaged in’ quartz and gravel mining on a limited scale. Add to it the amounts purchased from ‘similar sources by other bankeré ant cindividuals, besides the yield of'tlle' ten or twelve big mines inthe locality, and it will be seen that Nevada City. district puts many thousand dollars’ worth, of gold into circulation every week. ee The tronctad. ° The Ironclad mine at Rough*-and Ready is in ‘a ~ prospetous. shape. Another boily ef oot bre has rycently been developed, and contrary to tlie expectations of many the deposits of gold-bearing rock are improving steadily in extent and signs of pérmanency, The new mill and rdduction mathinery connected, therewith will start next Thursday, afid the opening ni ofthe mine will be pushed ahead as rtjidty as. possibie from that tinte forth. é 4 PES Poe Accident to a Minor. * Richard Samdow, while working in tie Providenceumine.
