ut “LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. . No Parer To-morrow.—According to ‘custom, too well established to be changed, no*work will be done in the TRANSCRIPT office to-day, and no paper willbe issued tomorrow. A Poor: ORPHAN.—On last Sunday a little boy named William Ramsey fell in a fit on the sidewalk near the New York’ ‘Hotel, and was carried into that house.— We léarn ‘that the ‘little fellow’s father died gyer the mountains, and that his mother died in this city..-He-is without home or friends in the world.” “He has _ been subject to these fits for some time, and they are’ no doubt the result of the hardships he has endured since his parents were taken from him.: It appears that he has tried hard to get something to do to sapport -himself, and has informed other boys that he was going to do something for which he might be sent to the Reform . School: There is something wrong in when the orphans find no hand ready to help them. The Orphan. Asylum at Grass Valley should be open to such children as this, and the State should make some provission for them. Now, at Christmas times, when other children are happy, little-Ramsey stands aloff, and gazes with an aching heart on the happy oneS°who are so fortunate as to be . blessed with kind and loving parents. No kind word for him. No one to make him him presents—presents! he knows not the meaning of the word: His nature is thesame as the children who have homes in our city. This day is peculiarly suited for the exercise of charity, and we would . Suggest that some steps be taken to secure ‘a home for’ the unfortunate orphan boy, where he may be taken care of, DAMAGE BY THE StoRM.—The storm has done considerable damage throughout _ the county, In many places large trees "Were uprooted or broken off by the winds of Thursday and Friday nights. On Friday night the large water wheel of Hanley & Co's. hoisting works, on Musquito Creek, was entirely destroyed by a large tree which was blown down upon it. We have not learned of any great damage being done in the mines, and we believe that all the quartz'mines have been kept free of water without much trouble. THe Exursition.—The Sunday School exhibition announced to come off at the Theatre last evening, has been postponed until further notice. The weather has been so stormy that it would be impossible to get the children out. The presents were distributed atthe church last night. . In Serre or Wearuer.—Yesterday, notwithstanding the weather a large number.were out buying presents and the stores where toys and Christmas goods were sold were filled with buyers until a late hour. ‘ All the Sunday Schools had their trees well loaded with presents, and ~~ Christmas Eve wasa merry time in spite of the storm, CARLISLE.—A gentleman writing from Carlisle, a mining camp near Meadow Lake, informs us that the town is quite lively and that the U.S. Grant mine is » being worked night and day, turning out first rate rock. ‘he mill will be kept in THe MARYsviLLZ StacEs—On Sunday night at 10 o’clock the first stage that has come through from Marysville since ' Thursday, arrived in this city bringing back papers and mails up to Sunday. Considand the trip now takes an entire day. A Sap Story.—A few days since an old _ lady came into ‘our office and told us a sad __ ttory of her life. She was apparently fifty ‘Years of age and said she had resided for ime'time near this city.
