; The Daily Tramarrip . = = g CurstMas DaYi—Tiis. Noliday is more generally observed by the Chiistian world than any other known to the calendar, and its observance is not confined'to the Churches, the customns be-” ing, many of them, of acharacter which enlists all classes without reference to creed. In the United States we have adopted some of the most attractive characteristics of the Christmas holjday in all other Christian countries, and consequently our observance of thé day . is of a cosmopolitan type, the people to some extent enjoying with their: families and friends the Christmas tree, as they used to in their younger days and in their far off homes. The “chil dren’s festival” or Christmas tree, which every German will rewember. among D > the recollections of “Father land” has, 4 been adopted by us,'and is enjoyed as :. well by grown le as by children, . “4 In the person of Santa Claus we havé _ the Knecht Rupert of the Germans, and wi :» jt would be well if parents would adopt : * more of the customs of Germany, aud < make this annual festival a time when the families are gathered together, and 7" a review taken of the conduct of each during the year, the good and the bad. 2 We have also many good old customs from England, among which none are more pleasant than the Christmas dinner. So great was the weakness for ag good things on this occasion in Engsae land,.that the proverb “He has more business than English ovens at Christmas” came into existence. These with : others of minor importance have come to be features of the holiday athong us, 3) and if properly observed they are cer: tainly pleasant. Rest and recreation is ES a blessing to mankind, while the gifts wi and social amenities are calculated ‘to x dévelop the best traits of human. nature. Oup charity on such occasions as to-day should extend beyond the family ons to the community, and so—far as we Be can, without detriment to ourselves, ev«#ty house should be made happy. Let those who have abundance remember ie the poor, and send some little gift to make their hearts glad to-day. \ ' Buyine PReEsents.—The stores in iS, this city, where Christmas goods were ils, sold, were well filled with purchasers, : notwithstanding the storm, and alarge rE. amount of goods were sold. We have never known a season when there were 00. “go many large stocks of holiday goods by in this city as this Winter, and among , ¢ the articles there weré very many of oud great value. “ Buying presents even unat der such circumstances is not a pleasa ant task, as all know who have tried it, vcs. the great trouble being that there are two-tastes to be suited in all such purKS, Name CHanGeD.—Mr. Sargent writes h, that he has procured a change of the aame of the post office at Nevada City, Colotado, to Bald Mountain. A great , Confusion has been made by the diffi_ culty of distinguishing the difference <p8" between Cal. and Col., as ordinarily ‘ written; and letters intended for one dian Place very often first find the other. a Nevada City, Col., is at the foot of Bald Mountain. here ~ __ CHRIstwas TrEEs—We visited the CM . Congregational, Methodist and Baptist Churches, yesterday afternoon and found the Sunday school committees of $s} each church busily engaged in prfpar-, ing the trees. Iri each the trees were + very handsome and were metited > with a large number of tiful presents, for old and young. Disobediencé to the laws of health, as regards diet; the use of pernicious stimulants; and the wear and tear of business excitement, and of ‘‘fast life’’ generally, have mach todo with the prevalence of these maladies in our cities; while in the interior, and especially in the pold yielding dis tricts, they are chiefly due to malaria, un“wholesome water, and the exposure and privation incident. to life in new settlements and mining camps. Now, IT Is A FACT that it is as possible to protect the human system againet these maladies, as to guard life and property against the incursions of assassins andthe thieves. Strengthen the vital organization with HOSTETTER’S STOMACH BITTERS, and it becomes as capable of resisting the active principle of epidemic or endemic disease, as a fire proof safe is of resisting the action ofcombustion. This is the experience ofthousands whe have remained unscathed . * by malarious disorders in the sickliest seasons, while their neighbors, wha neglected to tone and regulate their systems with this unequalled medicinial stimulant, have fallen thick and fast around them, Weakness invites disease. Vigor repels it. Help nature to fight the good fight with infection, whether it be-in the air, the water, or the svil, with this matchless preparation~a compound of, the rarest-vegetable extracts with the pures ‘of all diffusive stimulants. . «3 ® } reports in regard to: ..
