er the refore 6 ust. Silk s line. Ha, ‘the exeitement was intense. . from the Daily Transcript ‘Weaver & Company's Column. yom TUESDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 27. Exciting’ Race.—A grand ““‘Zou-Zou” face came off at Blaze’s Saloon, on Christmas Eve. “Erin-go-Unum,” in blue and silver, entered by F. Fisher, Esq. “E. Pluribus Bragh,” in‘ red and gold, entered by J. Bazeley, Esq. The track selected, Blaze’s counter. Stakes, drinks for the crewd.—{ Judges of starting and outcome, Messrs. A. C. Niles, T. T. Davenport, T. H.Caswell and C. Kent. The result of the race attracted an immense crowd.’ The first heat, which exhibited great bottom and skillful traning, was declared by the judges ‘te-te foul. The second heat, in which both “Eo Pluribus Bragh” and “Erin go Unum” did aniple justice to the judgment of their backers, was declared a dead heat. While pre: parations were making for the third heat, “E. Pluribus Bragh” had evidently become the favorite, and many bets were offered on him but no takers. All being in readiness, at the word, they started evenly for the third heat. “E. Pluribus Bragh,” however, soon. opened a gap between himself and opponent, which he maintained throughout, winning the raceeasily,.in 1:374—the quickest autamaton : time on record. . THE WEATHER.—By the wacer ‘guage: kept at the, South Yuba Canal Company’s office, three inehes-and seventy-eight hundredths of rain had fallen between Friday night and noon yesterday. . The rains have been continuons, and part of the time very heavy, with high wind on Sunday night, and the mountain’streams have risen liigher than during any previous storm. Had not we the evidénce of the Union tixt the former storms had not even raised the-wi ter at Sacramento enough to more than, touch the base of the splendid new levee, we should be apprehen_ sive that that thriving city might suffer from the terrible torrents that are being dischargedtéwards the valleys.” As our neighbors are 80 safe we enjoy the storm, and say “let it come.”’ .The miners and farmers are glad, and the early promise of the season is kept up. We think the sudden ang unusual rise of the creeks is owing to the rain extending far towards the summit, washing off the snows left by the last storm, although on. Friday night it was nearly cold enough for snow in this city. The miners have kept to work, ‘employing the uriusual abundance of water in sluicing off top dirt. One direct ‘benefit of the frequent freshets this year has been experienced in washing out from the beds of the creeks billions of tons of tailings, which have been accumulating for two years past, burying up flooms, and interfering with the “fall” in many claims. -Deer Creek has washed_out fifteen feet” and Greetihorn sixty feet. DESPERADO SHOT.—We ‘learn from H. Place that a shooting affair took place at Washington, on Saturday, between Joseph Coin and Henry Burns, resulting in the death of the latter. Burns was a Chiv., noted for reckless disregard of human life, having killed one or more persons in affrays, and was the terror of the community. About 12 o'clock Saturday, he picketta fuss with. Coin—who is apeaceable miner—in ‘a saloon, and threatened him, when Coin procured a pistol. Burns met Coin again in the street, andcommenced an attack upon him, when Coin fired twice, mortally-wounding Burns, who died at 3 o'clock Monday morning. Coin was examined before Justice Root and discharged, his act being clearly in te We learn from a pase, Si Eumka township that the snow fell eight inches at the town of Eureka on Saturday night, but it commenced raining in the morning, and is probably raining to the summit. The snow is about four feet deep on the Henness Pass between Eureka and Bowman's. Beyond Bowman’s to thé summit the snow is lighter, and there is very little slope of the Sierra. tA Grand Social Party will be given. at the National Exchange, on. next Monday evening. The arrangemente are almost completed, and full particulars will be given in to-morrow’s TRANSCRIPT. Tuus far this year there has been received State, from Oregon and Victoria, from Washoe and from, Mexico, the sum of $52,453,961. The amount of treasure shipped on the other ° A CARD. «..
