from Maguire's Opera. House, will appear .
at the Theatre in this city. The bill ‘to“night will "Be ‘particularly “attractive, as
ality “Fanchon.” This troupe have recently visited Sactamento and Marysville, and .
notwithstanding” ‘the’ ‘storm they met
such success that in both places their engagemént was extended considerabl y—
The papers pronounce Miss Kingsbury the
best-actress that ever visited this coast,—
The ‘Appeal says of her “Fanchon”, “Miss
‘Kingsbury in this character i is above critifism, ., If it is. not perfection, it is as. near .
as mortal can approach.’ ‘It is quite enough
to make us fear the power of fiction, for no
‘male or female, can witness Miss Kingsbury’s ‘Fanchon’ and resist the whirlpool
of infatnation. The lady exhibits a degree
of genius oy power of attraction somewhat remarkable in ‘contrast with her
profession.” . ‘The stage andthe acting is
forgotten and the audience is made to feel
that they are witnessing the scenes of real
life. ‘The character of the plays are far
better than any that have been presented :
in this city for years, and this fact ‘with
the great reputation of the“Witching Elfin
Star,” will insuré-a very large audience.—
Miss Kate Denin ‘is a favorite in. this city
and is‘an actress of considerable: ability,
John MeCullough is also a great favorite
and stands high in his profession. ‘We
anticipate that our citizens will turn out
more. generally to see this company than
they have in a long time. The. heatre
is thoroughly dry, and there is not. the
least. danger of . the plastering ‘coming
down. The company will have it clean
and 'vomfortable, Let all who want to
witness a splendid performance be on hand
this evening.
Tue CHRisrmas’ Trees, —Notwithstanding the stormy weather on Christmas
Eve; all the Churches’ in this city hada
distribution of presents. The Methodist
Church was crowded at an-early hour, and}
after singing by ‘the School and the reading of an address of Santa Claus, the presents with which the tree was weighted
down, many of them of great value, were
distributed and the children, “those of
small and larger growth as well, ‘seemed:
to appreciate the gifts brought, At the.
Catholic Church the trees were beautifully
decorated and a large number of presents
distributed. In the Congregational and
Baptist Churches, though no trees were
provided; the children were collected and
a large number of beautiful presents dis}
tributed.

A Bre CHUNK.—On Monday morning . ,

nugget of gold north of Pike Flat, near . .

chunk was nearly as large asa man’s hand
and considerably worn by the action of
water. The inequalities of the. surface
and the small particles of quartz sprinkled }over the surface indicate that it came
from a Iédge somewhere above. . It. was

Narrow Escarne.—Yesterday morning
Horace Ferre, superintendent of the California mine, was coming dawn Névada
street on horseback, his animal slipped
and fell upon the planking. Ferre was
thrown outof his seat in the saddle and
before he could disengage his foot from
the stirrup, the animal started at full speed,
Oates’ wagon shop, through which there
is a passage to Broad street. Here Ferre
grasped the fender of a-wagon and held.
on until his boot was torn from his foot,
and he freed from his perilous position.
