The Virginia Chronicle in speaking of the men imprisoned in the Gould & Curry mine has the following to say of Peter Eddy, whosepartner in the ownership of the patent referr. ed to is ex-Co'nty Surveyor Hartwell . of this city: ‘‘Eddy returned here a few months ago after an absence of eleven years, during which he resided in Grass Valley and Nevada City. . He had invented a machine for con. centrating stlphurets contained in tailings. He had it.in operation on a bank of tailings near a stamp mill in Grass Valley. “ihe royalty charged for the tailings by the owners of the mil] left Eddy but a very small imargin above operating expenses. His . object in returning to the Comstock was for the purpose of earning a sutlicient sum in the mines to pay for the construction of another machine. “With two he was satisfied that he coud make a comfortable living for his family.”’ —>-—-+ Geo A Woman's Accusation. ocamecyt woman named Rosa Hume’ who lives with Mrs. Mitchell at Randolph Flat, Rough and Ready township, came out from the bushes near the, roadside in that locality’‘and told some people who were passing that she had been the victim of an infamous proceeding. She said a man named En¢ } sign had prevailed upon her to accompany him there in a buggy, and upon arrival in a secluded place had carried. out his scheme. Her garments were much torn. Her story is not given credence by all. Ensign has been arrested and held to answer at a preliminary examination which is set for the 19th instant.
