Christmas.
“Merry Christmas,” the day of all
others io theyear when happiness
fills the hearts of the people of Chris‘tian lands, has come and gone, leaving in its wake pleasant remembrancea which will not soon fads. Nuw-ay-dags the most enjoyable commemo. rgtion_ of the event occurs on Christmas{Eve, and not on the day itself.
At Jeast, so far as the children are
concerned—and for them it seems to
~ be especially calculated—this holds
“trae; for-then it is that Santa Claus
makés his appearance, laden with
stores of beautiful and useful presents. His coming is eagerly looked
forward to with ecstatic impatience
by the children, aod when he finally
arrives they are transported with joy
at the actual realization of tho anticjpations.
During Monday the oity was given
up to preparations for the rapidly
approaching festivities. ‘The shops
had on their holiday garb, throngs of
“purchasers went flitting along the
business streets with their arms full
of mysterious packages, and the dealers put on a smile which seemed, to
say thatthe day’s proceedings was
eminently -satisfactory.
The principal celebrations of festivities of Christmas, “so far as we
can learn, took place on Christmas
Eve at the following named _ places,
and in the manner described:
* At the Baptist Church, the Christmas tree was neatly decorated with
gifts, and illaminated with’ tapers.
“Evergreen trimmings adorned the
walls, and the effect produced was:
fine. Musical exercises, a visit
from Santi Claus who distributed
confections to the children and kisses to the ladies, and the distribution
of presents from the tree, constituted
an evening’s entertainment which
afforded much pleasure to the participants. The attendance was good. ~
At the Congregational Church, a
large tree was erected, on which twinkled amidst the green boughs scores
of waxen tapers. There® being a
large number of presents received for
distribution amongst the members of
this Sunday School and their friends,
only a portion of them could be attached to the tree. Many elegant
gifts were noticed here. ‘There was
a musical programmee of much interest. The decorations evinced
remarkably good taste, and the admiring audience filled the house to
overflowing.
The festivities at the Episcopal
Church, were postponed until
Wednesday evening, when the school
had exercises consisting of singing,
recitations, address by the pastor
and the appearance of Sauta Claus
from the house made of evergreens.
He emerged loaded down with presents, and the little children danced
wits glee when they saw him come
tiwards them with tokens of remembranée from dear friends. Altogether,. it was delightfal, and will long
be remembered by the little ones a
well a3 the larger ones,
At the Methodist Church, a Christmas Ladder was erected, instead of a
tree. This Ladder—which, by the
way, is a novelty in this country—extended nearly the entire distance
from the floor to the ceiling, and was
ingeniously twined about witb evergreens and bright colored paper,
and numerous tipers illuminated the
ludder and gifts suspended thereon,
The remaining decorations were also.
fine, notubly so the large evergreen’
bell which hung in the front part of
the auditorium over the gallery.
‘There was a long programme of
much interest including songs and
recitations. The attendance was
very large,
The Catholic Chureh, of this city,
presented a very handsome appearance on Christmas Day, it being
decorated with -flowers, ivy and
other lovely evergreens. The siug' ing was very fine and the services
were eloquent and impressive.
“At the National Exchange and Union Hotels, trees were erected, and
the guests of the respective houses
aud numerous invited friends assembled in the parlors, and a large number of beautiful and costly gifts were
distributed.

A Kiss and w Hepiture.
Conductor McKinney is responsible for the following: One day Jast
week a leading citizen of this city
went to Grass Valley on the afternoon train with his wife. They sat
together, talking, just as if they were
recently married, when in fact they
had been inthe matrimonial harness for about ten years. The gentleman referred to has business that
calls him .away very often, and of
course he takes a ride on the cars,
and usually meets lady. acquaintances, and always plants himself by
their side. Being a good conversationalist, the ladies rather enjoy
his company, but the worst part of it
his wif had heard a great deal about
it, and is rather inclined to be a little jealous of his attentions to the
ladies, Well, last week, for a wonder,‘he had time to go to Grass Valley with his wife, and as soon as the
cars arrived at the Town Talk Tunnel, it being as “dark as pitch,” he
placed his arm around -his wife’s
neck emd kissed her. She thowglt
it.was donejby a man who sat behind
her, and by the time the train
got out of the ‘tunnel she was
as mad as a “March fare.” z
“Did you see that man kiss me?’
she loudly exclaimed to her husband.
“Oh, no, that was me,” ae he,
“and I never go through this tunnel
without kissing some lady, ud it is
only dark.”
This was a little too each for the
wife, and she Teft the seat and did
not speak to him again while on the .
train. It is rumored that a divorce
suit is on the tapis. ee

$1,000 Worth « of Cedars.
We leurn from the soliciting agent
of Johnsen’s Cyclopedia, that he has
succeeded in obtaining orders of our
citizens, already amounting to more
than $1,000. Evidently the people
of Nevada City can appreciate a
good thing, and fully recognize the
value of a standard work and a reliable authority. We have several
times spoken of this work, and it is.
with pleasure that we learn -of its
large circulation, Again we would
commend it-to every family and person desiring to be informed.
A thousand topics, in science, ‘history, biography and other branches of
literature are continually presenting
themselves to@etive inquiring minds,
and to be well posted, one must
needs have reconrsé to authoritative
works of reference—to facts, stripped ot all coloring or exaggeration:
Johnson’s Cyclopedia is pre-eminently such a work. Of this, we
think any one'will be convinced who
will take the pains to examine it.
The agent intends to still further
inorease his list of orders, and we
hope he may succeed in doing 80;
money for.a library is, to
our mind, a good d paying investment.

! It Was Destiny. :
The Virginia Enterprise says An
Ka-tern journal reports that the General of the Army thinks it was a want
of foresight on the pait of General
Scott that when, in 1847, he hadcaptured the Mexican copital, he did not
hold the soyereignty ef the country in his own hands for the United
States, and call upon his soldiers to
suj port him, thus securing to Mexicoa st:ble government. Such an
idea gives scope for infinite ,speculation. Had this oevarred, there would
have been no rebellion in our own
secured ten or twelve new States and
thereby held the balance of power.
The great struggle would have been
postponed for years, and when it
came the slave power would have
been tou strong to crush. As: we
glance back over the events of the
last thiity years, itlooks as though
ing parts which they could not avoid
as an unseen hand moves the scenes
and and unseen prompter called the
acts. Witbout a right assailed, the
whole South, because of a defeat at
the polis, became frenzied aud rushed
to arms. Almost as great a frenzy then
took possession of the North, and a
four years’ war succeeded. Money
and blood were poured out like water,
‘and when it was over, only one thing
was apparent. ‘Lhe institution of
buman slavery in America had become abhorent to the intelligence of
the nineteenth century, and had
been wiped away. Money enough
had been spent to purchase, ut the
highest price, every slave in the
country, and the glory of the land,
Nort: and South, bud been sacrificed.
Then followed: the demoralization,
the extravagance and the depravity
which always succeed great wars. The
nation is still staggering under the
loads left by the waf, and it will be
years before the old healthfal condition which existed before the war returus. If the men who stcrmed
Chapultepec, and who stood under
the storm of the guns of 22,000 enemies at Buena Vista, could have but
looked into the future for a score of
years, it would have unnerved them.
But, really, they were fighting for a
new coast, where a people were to
spring up and dedicate the land to
freedom, and uncover from the sands
the treasure which should be the nations’ stay in the mighty struggle
which was even then approaching.
And when General Sherman looks
back and speaks regretfully of, the
parts played by the heroes who triumphed in the Mexican war, he is
to} but inveighing against Providence,
for a destiny was then shaping the
ends of the nation whivh it would
have been vain to seek to resist or
turn aside.
