Maggie Gill, a woman of the town,

A Word te Young Men.
Burdette of the Hawke e addressed some words to 8 young man
of his acquaintance that every yonth
in Nevada county could fad and
heed to advantgye, Said he: One
thing, my boy, in your ambitious
haste, form or accept ‘advanced
opinions.” Be pretty certain that
you are abreast of the world before
you look back to see how far it is
behind you. Many men, looking
over their shoulders to see how the
world is following them, and not
seeing it, imagine they have left the
rest of us clear out of sight. If
they would only look straight ahead,
they would sée the old globe trudging along in the same steady old
gait, one hundred years to a century,
and not at all aware thagpany “‘advanced thinker” had -fallen off and
got lost in the blinding dust that
drifts and swoops away behind the
chariot wheels. It is the correci
thing, I know, in these rushing daya,
to be “advanced,” but be sure you
are looking in the right direction
before you advance, and then you
may advance as far and as fast as
you please. But remember, the goldier who turns round and faces to
the rear before he beyins ‘‘advanc:
ing,” may, and indeed he u-ually
does “advance” faster than avy other
man inthe regiment, but it is called
retreating, all the same,
Timely Remedies.
If you have corns, try wearing
larger boots or shoes.
If your girl does not like fried oysters try her with oysters on the half
shell.
If you can’t afford to eat a four-bit
meal, try one for two-bite.
If water don’t agree with you, tae
your whisky straight.
If your wife is cross and peevish
when you come home late at night,
and disapproves of your keeping late
hours, try coming home the next
morning.
