The origin of the fire is unknown, some being of the opinion that it was the work of an incendiary., The building was entirely destroyed—loss, $4,000. The Sunday, Law. Next Sunday is the last day upon which business can be done without violation of the Sunday law as contained in the code. All who read the papers know the law goes into effect, or at least is given new force by the eodes prepared by Haymond and Burch, and passed without examination by the Legislature. These codes, upon which was expended about three years work, are very little improvement upon the old statutes, except where they are copied bodily from the New York codes. All the vagueness and imperfections of. our own statutes are continued, and origi ir-work is faulty. The Sufiday law, with all its imperfections is retained in the code. Cars Arrived. The Grass Valley Unionannounces the arrival of a train of cars at Rough and Ready in time to go on the Christmas tree. Two trains, probably belonging to the same narrow gauge lin’, arrived in this aity direct from San Frasiciaco yesterday. The proprietors do not ask any subsidy er land grant from Grass Valley, as they propose to leave that locality out in the cold. “That handsome printer the Union brags of can Bet a pass, provided he will ride én. the cowcatcher, to scare animals off the track; or} will occupy a station on Sugar Loaf to keep the crows off. . —— NOFUSSIL AT LESTER & MULLOY’ 8.
