Mear the Bells..
The facility with which the moun:
tain atmosphere hereabouts conv eys
sound from one point to another under certain conditions is a subject
worthy of note. Along’ towards
nightfall, and especially -when the}
heavens are cloudy, the church bells
places no less than six miles distant,
and with remarkable clearness of tone.
The-tiarked difference observed : between standing within one ortwo and
six miles of town is that in the lat-:
ter case the taps of the bells echo
and re-echo over mountains and
through valleys until for every blow
really struck, three-ér four distinct
reverberations follow in quiek succession.
Wilson Ranch Mine.

The 2 hoisting works of the Wilson
Ranch mine in Willow Valley will
soon be under cover. The building
is 70x20 feet in dimensions, and with
the machinery that will be put i inina
few days, was formerly used at the
Gold Tunnel mine. Hydraulic pipe
is to be laid so a hurdy-gurdy . can be

Death of Hart Fellows.
Hart Fellows, Receiver of the Unito, died at 5 o'clock Thursday morn" ing of pneumonia, The deceased had
only been confined to.his bed for
three days, but sunk rapidly after
being taken dowa. Mr. Fellows was
a nativ: of Massachusetts, was in his
8¥st year, and came to California in
1849, from Illinois. He formerly
held the position ef Surveyor of the }
Port of San Francisco, under appoint. ’
ment from President Millard Fillmore. He had also been County
J udge of Placer county, to which he
was twice elected. He has always
been prominently identified in public.
