HERE AND THERE.
While down here under the’ shadows of the mountains we are sitists are in dread lest fruit and almonds trees may get~dn impressiun
from the balminess of the ambient
air that spring has actually come,
and blossom out to be nipped in the
bud by frosts that are quite certain
yet to be, our fellow countrymen
in the extreme highlands are’ suffering all the horrors of a North Pole
winter. The Bodie Free Press says
that at Tioga the other day neaily
all the work oxen belonging to the
great Sierra Company had their
hoofs frozen 80 that they fell off, and
it was necessary to kill the poor
animals, ‘‘Moreno’s pack train
came from Bennettville to Lundy
safely, but with great exertion.
John Singleton, coming over the
same day, had with him a small terrier dog—quite a pet at the mines.
The little fellow’s tail and. ears
froze, and Singleton took him in his
arms and wrapped him up in a
woolen scarf, notwithstanding which
. the dog froze to death. . it blew big
guns in Landy Friday afternoon,
bat cleared up Saturday morning.”
EN SARTRE TTT
Is 1869 the late Senator Carpenter predicted that not many years
would elapse before there would be
“practically but one telegraph company in the United States,” and
that railway consolidation, if allow.
ed to go oa unchécked, might sooner
or later result in such a combination
that few magnates could *‘sit ia Wall
street with closed doors, and, by the
light of a candle, direct the whole
cirrying trade of this continent.’
He was thoroughly ridiculed
this prophecy.

Prorie are beginnining to lose
faith in the Comstock lode. It is
J evident that there is not an ore
body in sight, and there are no indications that a development will be
made-during the coming winter. According to the report of the Stock
Board Committee there is a great
deal of stealing going on in the
Gold Hill mines, and this alleged
thievery tidy extend over the whole
world,
