ied that Gew. Granr.—It is not
a Gtaiit te Fapidly growing in p -pdlarity:
Even now Webbiev® tim to be the most
distinguished in popular estimation of any
‘ina an Aimérign” He’ deserves it. He is
the General of all our generals; the militery
genius of the nation. We believe in reward.
‘brig bin according té'bis merits, awd his merite are greatest of allour public men. He
ia talked of for the Presidency.. and if’ we
thought the nation would be best served by
electing Gen. Grant, we woaldwork for bis
election till it was secured, Ifnething mars
hls fame, be must be President of the United
States some day ifhe lives. But the greatest
wantof the natiun is a commander of ite armies; Where shall we look for another like
. Grant? The truth is, Gen. Grant can no
more-be spared from field eommand than
Christ from the plan of salvation. "Till this
war is over, Grant. isindispensible. He dia
vided the Confederacy once by conquering
Vicksburg.and opening the Mississippi. We
want him to break the back of the rebellion
where he ig predsing th at.Chattannogs, We
want him to add to his already exalted military fame to become Lieutenant General
‘of the armies of the American Republic, and
when others can fill. his place. in the field
withent danger to, the good cause, wa are
for Gen. Grant for any phsition he ia willing .
te occupy. He ought to be President of
the United’ States for his great deeds. But
we hope, for the avke of the country kw will
continue to lsimeb hie victorious columns
against the enemy till the rebellion is pulverized, und then let him be called to the head
of the ovation, with ene universal acelain.
We believe in big good sense and wisdom.
So far he bas attended. strictly to his own
business —to the work of conquering the en-.
emy with which ‘he bud'ty deal. His finger
has not been séen in politics. He has given
the Government no trouble, There has not
been a querulous note from him from the be~
ginning of the war. He has felt that there
abould be unity among loyal men ‘and has
@triven'to produce nd discurd himself. In. ?
this respect he hae been a model patriot,
adding lustre to his lame. We hope be will] p
see the real necessities ef the country and
_ not be led off by the glare of the Presidency,
and we beliote hie God eodee Will guide him
aright.
. Itid a matter of no Gonseqdénce to ‘fis
whe is elected Président 26 the interests’ of
the. nation are subserved “We care nuthing
for Lincola, Banke, Ghitee, Butler; or, any
other prominent; patriot of thy day. “fhe
cause is everything, and wen nothing only so
far as they subserve the general good. We
don't propose to advocate the claims of any
one man for the Presidency, because public
opinion shoulduet be forestalled at this earty
: dey. Great events aro daily trunapiring and
it ie possible that » man may make himself so
prominent withia two or three months thay
destiny will seem to pu.ntity him as the
proper man for the ceria. We are for the
best men for every place aud we have faith
that the next Union National Cuoreotion will
make a judicious selection. Lf the conditiva
of the evuctry will allow it, we are for Grant,
and ifs.et, we are fur the next best and moet
deserving. man tor the Presidency, whow the
National Coavention shall select.

his ecrvices be dematided to define his position on the issues of the day? Itis well
