LOCAL INTELLIGENCE,
Forest SPRInGs—Earraquaxkss,
_Mrxgs AND DANOES.—A correspondent,
us writing from Forest Springs, gives
the following items: SO NUGEY
‘The earthquake shock on Sunday
evening was quite severe. The vibra" tions continued about ten seconds, from
southeast to northwest. It jarred the
house and hedved it up and down, just
‘as if it were lifted from beneath.
The old Norumbagua mine is being
opened by Wm. Sutton & Co., under a
five years’ lease. The mine is still good
as it was before being purchased by
Cronise & Co. for $100,000, but on account of mismanagement in Cronise’s . si
hands, it failed to pay, and was closed
down nearly two years ago, and has
remained idle until Sutton & Co. leased
it lately. There is a tunnel of 1,100
feet in length, which was run at an average éxpense of $35 per foot by the
old company, fromi which the present
company propose taking the rock, instead of hoisting it up the old incline.
The tunnel. will be extended eighty-five
feet, tapping the ledge at water level. . :
There is no doubt the mine will pay
under the present management, Mr. ,
~ Sutton having worked in it for eleven
years, and knowing just where the pay
rock lies and just what expense the
mine will bear. The old quartz mill
. will be put in running order soon, and
used by the present company. ;
Perrin’s mine near by it has been
_ paying large profits, and there.is every
indication ef itscontinuing. Two other
ledges which have always paid, but have
not been worked regularly for want of
capital, are going’to work in the Spring,
so the prospects are good for Forest
Springs being @ lively camp again. _
Christmas passed off pleasantly, the
people erecting a Christmas tree and
engaging in the merry dance on Friday
evening. The tree was very fine, being
richly laden with gifts, and would commore pretentions.
THE EaRTHQUAKE S#Hocn.—The
shocks of Sunday night appear to have
been felt at every point in the county,
and though there is: some variation in
opinion as to the direction, the prepon.
derance of testimony seems to be that
the vibrations were from West to East,
or possibly southwest to northeast. A
__Sorrespondent, writing from Birchville, .
Bridgeport township, says the shock on
Sunday night occurred at 12 minutes
to6 by San Francisco time, and that
the duration was about five seconds,
In this city two slight shocks were felt
on Monday evening, between § and ten
minutes past 8 o’clock, and .some persons felt one at half past 12 o’clock yesterday morning. “They were of the
same motion as those preceding.
CHANGE oF TimgE.—The new time
table of ‘the Central and Western Pacific Railroads will go into effect the
first day of January 1870: The up
bound express will leave San Francisco
at 8 a. M.; Sacramento, at 2 P.M.; and
arrive at Colfax by 5:50 Pp. Mm. The
down express will leave Colfax at 9:20
A.M.; Sacramento, at 1:10 P.M.; and
arrive at San Francisco by 7:30 P. M.
The mail and emigrant train will leave
San Francisco at 4 p.M.; Sacramento,
at 4:30 the next morning, and arrive
atColfax by 11:45 4.M. . .
_ SatcHEL Founp.—A satchel, which
was found on the ridge road, between
this place and Grass Valley has been
left at this office for the owner, It contains an account. book, some letters and
papers, and among the former is one
directed to Mrs. Ann Tracy, Sierra Valley, from Sisson, Egbert & Co., Truckee.
There are also sundry toilet articles:
for which we have no use. The owner
' Can get the article by sending to this
_ Office, _
Waren PLEenty.—We learn vhat
the recent storms have given abundance
of water in all the mining ditches below this city. Should such weather as
Wehad yesterday continue for a short
ume, the ice would melt and the miners
_ Would be able to.go to work in every
part of the county,

TakeN Awax—A hat, broad brimmed and Black stringed, was violently .
snatched from the head uf a lady by old
Boreas, afew days since. This, to say .
the least, was a very ungallant act on
the part of the “old . blower” especially
since he refused to drop the hat within
reach of the owner.
_ A Lrwx.—A veritable lynx was killed
by Nat Bailey and Alex Gault, on the
tr It measured about 2} feet “froin
tip to tip, and probably weighed 18 or
pounds. They also captured a fox
and three hares.

Snow.—The snow at Eareka is from
eighteen inches to two feet deep and on
the Washington ridge it, is from a foot
to sixteen inches. ed

he Great Medical Mistake,
Of former days was an utter neglect of sanitary precautions. No efficient means wére
adopted for the prevention of sickness. Sewerage was unknown in cities; drainage was
rarely attempted in the country. Heaps of
offal were lett to rot in the public streets,
and domestic cleanliness, the great antidote
to febrile diseases, was sadly neglected. It
is not so. now. Wise laws, philanthropic
institutions, and a vigilant sanitaty police,
have, to a great extent, remedied the evil.
Noris this all, PREVENTIVE MEDICATION has
helped materially to lessen the rates of mortality. It is not too much to say that TENs
OF THOESANDS escape sickness in unhealthy
seasons in consequence of having INvIeoRATED THEIR SYSTEMS IN ADNANCE by a course of
HOSTETTER’S STOMACH BITTERS. This
pure and powerful vegetable tonic and alterative comprises the extracts and essences of a
variety of roots and herbs, renowned for
their strengthening, soothing, vitalizing and
purifying properties. These medicinia] agents
are incorporated with a spirit absolutely free
from the acrid poison which defiles, more or
less, all the liquors of commerce, and their
effect is diffused through the whole frame by
this active, yet harmless stimulant, The result is such a condition of the system as renders it ALL BUT L1PERVIOUS to the exterior
causes of disease, such as damp, fog, sudden
alternations of tempeature, &c.—Strength,
andthe perfect regularity of all the functions
of the body, are the best safeguards against
atmospheric poison and the effects: of unwholesome water, and HOSTETTER’S BIT.
TERS are the best strenghening and regulating medicine at present known. For dyspepsia and biliousness they are & SPECIFIC
ABSOLUTE.
