The Bodie Free Pres’ says: The
Oro Mining Company. on ‘Tuesday
paid off its late employes, giving
them checks” for one-third the
amount due, and notes payable at
sixty days for the balance. The
men generally accepted this arrangementy with possibly some reluctance
with the exception of one Mike Mc_ Cullum, who said he wanted his
" check in fall, William Barker was
the only other person present besides
McCallum and Superintendent Thoras Steel. The latter informed Mc* Cullum that he was only authorized
to givea check for one-third, and
could do nomore. McCullum said
“that he was goiny to have his check
' before Steel left the office. ‘How
are you going to get it?’ said he.
“1 am going to make you give it to
me,” replied McCullum. The mananswered McCullum, ‘‘I am,” and
he drew from his pocket a six-shooter about a fcot long. ‘Is it loaded ?”
inquired Mr. Steel now thoroughly
_ interested, _‘'Yes,” said _McCullum,
and he pointed his pistol out of the
door and fired off a shot. “Now,”
added he, ‘‘the d-—d company owes
me this money and I want it right
* off.” Mr. Steel saw) he. was in a bad
fix. The manevidently intended to
kill him, if he did not write» the
check, and be had 1o authority to is“sue it. “Mr. Barker,” suid he ‘what
‘would you doif you were in.’my

quick.” . And h got down and wroteit out. MeCulliim kept his gun in
his hand all thé time, and after he

requested to sign the pay roll, he

said he, “but if I pat my gun in my

Barker, you go and sigan my name to
that pay roll.” °Mr.: “Barker, who
wished to be friendly with both parti signed the document with great

bank and got his check cashed, and
