RoucH ON THE SruMPist.—John Smith, superintendent of. stumpage, ‘yecently visited Bear Valley, hunting up lumbermen and shake makers. He did not succeed in collecting’ much 5} stpmpage, and the shake makers con_ «inced him that he was no “great . ghakes” after all; in fact they turned the tables on John Smith or John Nelson Smith, and instead of going down into their own pockets to hunt. shake money, they went: down into his.to such an extent that he soon became satisfied that the income was less in that region than the “come out.” The aforesaid. agent went to Flint’s to get a horse to ride about five miles, and on his return he was assessed “hoofage” to the tune of $7 50, which he paid, and ° goon after left the county for Sacrament>, where we learn he has arrived, probably convinced that finding stumps is one thing and collecting stumpage quite another, . —» _ Tae WaLnour.—Quite a number of ‘black walnut trees are growing in this‘ county, and we shall probably have some of these excellent nuts in market. There is a tree nine years old, on Sut. ton’s ranch, from which he gathered three bushels of . walnuts this season. The Montgomery Brothers in Pein: Valley have a number of trees of. this variety. The English walnut. tree is slower in bearing than the black ‘walaut. P. Sutton has one the same age as his black watiut tree, but largerHe gathered three pounds of fine wal. nuts from it this season, : NorHIne -Goop.—A friend of ours who recently visited the southern countiespromised us to write to the TRANSCRIPT what he might see of interest in that locality. He failed to do so, exexcusing himself on the ground that“he could not say anything good of the country.” He informs us that business is as dull in the towns and on the ranches in that locality as in Nevada, und that the complaint of hard times is almost universal in the State. BeavutiruL WEATHER.—For two days past the weather has been worthy _ofJune. The airis fresh and balmy, © and the sun Warm enough for Spring. ~ There are not many countries that can boast of such weather in December. Laree Porcine.—James Colley, on Thursday, slaughtered a hog which he raised, weighing 300 pounds. He has kil. .d two others from the same pen the lightest of which weighed 290 pounds. The 300 pounder was two years old. THE Grass Valley Union says it is rumored a weekly paper is to be started in this county under the auspices of the Miner’s Union, to advocate the interests of miners and mine owners. ‘Swiss CHEEsH.—A. Isoard,of this city,. has received overland a Swiss cheese, weighing 144 pounds. It is much newer than such cheese usually is, and will be a treat to those who are fond of this article. Rumorep SaLE.—It was reported yesterday that the Eureka: mine, Grass Valley had been sold to an English Company for $1,500,000. The Eureka is one of the leading mines of the State, and has yielded its owners big fortunes. WiLD. Pickons—We learn t there are large numbers of wild pigeon 4 On the ridge, this side of Tompkin House, Bear Valley. ANOTHER ImporRTATION.—Chow You, & Chinaman of this place, says the Grass Valley Union, has just retarned from San Francisco, whither he went to inspect: the slave market. He pur. chased one fair specimen of his race and Would have purchased more, but he “found the market high. Girls ‘are ‘in _ gteat demand. Chow You says very _ homely ones bringing $300, and choice specimens selling readily at $600. Chow You's girl cost him~$600 delivered in Grass Valley. Chow You says that large importations are to follow from China, the big companies, and some “Melican. men” being interested in the trade. The women cost the companies little excep’ em Resolutions, evada, Dec. 1, 1869. Wuerras, It has pleased the Alfrom our midst our late worthy and esteemed fellow member, John F. Bussenius, and Whereas, The intimate relations jong held by the deceased with the members of this Company render it proper that we should place upon record our appreciation of his services as a fireman, and his merits as a man, therefore : “Resolved, That we deplore the loss of John .F. Bussenius with deep regret, softened only by the confident hope, that his spirit is with those who, having fought the good fight here, are now ev-. ‘joying pertect ha iness” ip a better world. ici ag Resolved, That in his death we recognize the loss of one who was a. good citizen, a devoted fireman and an upright man. Resolved, That the hall of meeting be draped in mourning for thirty days. Resoived,. That a copy of these resolutions be published in the: Nevada Daily TRanscripT and Daily Gazette. CHANGED HER Mrinp.—Perhaps many of our old settlers will remember the “Robinson family, a theatrical troupe, of which Miss Sue ] pretty and versatile actress traction, which gave performances here and other towns in Northern California about the year 1857. J. B. Robinson the father, was a comedian of. considerable merit. He now resides at Legrand, Oregon, A dispatch from Portfor divorce on the ground‘of non-support. She now withdraws the suit, on the ground that. Kobinson has: fallen heir to $80,000 by the -death of ‘a relative, : A Swoop.—John Sale, says the Grass Valley Union, observed a large sized chicken hawk swoop down and catch a very fat young chicken. The chicken was too heavy forthe hawk to make much headway in flying, and so the bird of prey resolved to take a meal in a clump of bushes near to where the seizure occurred. Sale borrowed a gun from a viner, went to where the hawk and chicken were, fired the gun, scared the hawk and captured the chicken. The ex-Marshal says hawks should .b¢ protected hy.Legislative . enactment, They are friends to humanit MILLINERY Goops.—Miss E. Coffee, formerly a resident of this place, has arrived in this city, and is stopping at the National Exchange Hotel, where she has for sale a nice lot. of , Millinery Goods, consisting in pert of Ladies’ Misses’ and Children’s goods, mourning bonnets, &c. Ifyou wish to buy goods cheap call on Miss Coffee immediately, She intends to remain here only « few days. 6 * Let not Prejudice usurp your Reason. “ It is a fact that, in the minds of many per sons, a prejudice exists against whatare called _patent medicine; but why should this prean array ef testimony to support it as HO 8TETTER’S STOMACH BITTERS? Physicians prescribe it; why should you discard . tb? have and do use it in their families ; ‘why ehould you reject it?
