The average mining cost was $4.10 and the milling sixty cents per ton, thus making the average working expenses $4.70 per ton. This is neary a half dollar higher than-in the preceding half year, and was. caused by the heavy out-lay, $15,723.32, for making the ninth level, representing an average of seventy-five cents per ton on the output of the mine. The average yield of ‘the ore in free gold was $6.47 and with that from the tailings $7.06 per ton. ; The Plumas Eureka Mine accounts for the half year show a balance to the credit of profit and loss of 34,8581 10s 4d. The quantity of ore produced during che half year was 27,800 tous from the Plumas Eureka mine, 1,375 tons from the Seventy-six mine and 380 tons from the Rough and Ready mine, making the total outwas 29,645 tons. The average cost of mining was $8.10 per ton and of milling forty-eight cents, thus making the average working expenses $3.58 per ton. The average yield of the ore in free gold was $6.88 per ton. The sulphurets produced a total of $5,045.26, but their treatment by roasting in the furnace has proved unsatisfactory, and Mr. says they are too rebellious to be] j successfully worked, nnless _by smélting, and they are not rich enough to warrant the erection of : smelting works. .* * * At presgetting what gold can beobtained by this way of working and are being concentrated fur @ future working or sale, whichever’ may be found the most profitable. ‘The details of the half year’s operations at the mine are given in the reports of Mr. Johns and Capt. Hosking. The amount spent in prospecting the mine was $24, 871.27, including $5,881.24 on the] h 2,468 feet of levels, winzes, etc Captain Hosking says: ‘‘No doubt it that notwithstanding the large terfered a great deal with my wine crop, and I am busy just now, while the weather ig clear and cold, drawRUTEL AKRIVALS. I intended to write a paper in. remarks in connection with that subject. The first question reads as foliows: Is the extermination of i:sects injurious to frait and fruit trees a necessity? I say it is, for I am rather inclined to eaterminate those noxious insects, if I cau, than have my efop of fruitand my fruit trees exterminated by those insects. [ alway® recognize self-protection as a iaw of nature. The second question is: Can such insect pests as iniest the orchard, etc., be exterrrinated? Thatis the question, Against some insects we bave found, it is true, goo.i and efficacious remedies, while against others we have tound nuthing yet; and itisin this view that State*and County Boards of Horticultural Commissiouers have been created, so as to nd the best remedies for fighting, checking or exterminating those enemies of our orchards, and to see the Iiws for the protection of fruit aud fruit trees be enforced, I say in the affirmative, that those insedt pests can be exterminated, or at least their ravages checked; but it will require time, patience and a long study of those very insects’ habits to enable enable us to find ellicacious remedics for either checking their ravages or exterminating them altogether. Atl our hopes We in practical etomology; but practical etomology ‘is but a science of yesterday; and let me say that it is to the honor and credit ot our State that in no country has practical ,etomology made such a marked piogeess as it has. in California, Still there is an immense amount of work yet to be accomplished, and that is the reason ofcaliing the fruit growers in convention .and have them to discuss fully and intelligently this momentuous question, a0 closely connected to their interests, aid provide for the means of fighting succeesfu'ly the“ insects’ invasion, The third quesion: In order to protect the horticultural interests of the State, is leyislation necessary, or should the present laws for the protection of horticulture be amended and repealed? I say alsoin the aftirmative, that to protect the borticultural interests of the State legislation is absolutely necessary. ‘The preseut laws do certainly need amending; in which way that is to the convention to decide, But _.on one point I will be quite explicit? [t is to have the horticultural interest entirely distinct from the viticultural interest, and not one tacked to the tail of the other. Iu the interest of both horticulture aud Viticulture, let us have a separate and distinct organization. for both.
