ConThe Burning of ‘Hamilton Rall. . A-correspondent sends us the following interesting account of the fire at Grass Valley on Friday morning. It is better and more graphically described 'than_any we have seen, pabsiensey I+ wa ror shih possible that H: milton at dould be burned without i lose Gt several aijoining buildings, but Friday morning's fire proved to the contrary. The pa: ticulars, as far as we-can Yesascertain them are as follows: terday afternoon Mr. Pooler came to town on business, and having com-~ pleted the same, stopped at the store of Wm, H. Smith, purchased a paper of tea aud started for home, Having got as far as Coyote hill, instead of taking the road he took the cut-off across claims, in which is a.pond of water, near which a plank walk “is ‘cons structed, The suppusitiou is that he stumbled or slipped off the plank; Which several (feet above “the pond, and precipitated into the water and Wiud, frou which he was unable to extricate himself. Hamilton were conceded hopeless, ‘and al efforts to:save them were thought a waste of time, The entire household furniture of Mr. Hamilton was soon removed across the strect. Chief Engineer Seliger, with his Assistants and men did ‘noble work, Several times the roof of Hamilton’s dwelling was on fire, and thé whole end adjoining the Hall was burned through to the ifside, Con-sidering the nearness of the dwelling to the Hall, aud ‘it being a frame strocture, itis wonderful how they saved it, The stable-of. Dr. MeCormick; immediately. back of the Hall was burned, and at. one time the residences of Edward Coleman and A. B. Dibble were ‘thought in danger. The fire companies first had two. streams playing against the building, when soon after a third was ordered on by the Chief Engineer, and the ‘flames thus being fought from three points were confined to the’burning building, and no further danger apprehended, Dr. McCormick’s residence on the south side was saved, but sustained damaye from water and the. falling of a brick chimney which: badly demolished the roof, The origin of the fire is unknown; and is supposed to have been the work of an incendiary. “The loss of G.
