The Daily Transcript NEVADA CITY. CAL. io Taesday, December 5, 1876. Who Shiall Decide. When Gen. Juckson ye npied tbe Presidential chair, a qyesion srexe as to whether bis nct 14 cansing the’ removal of the public’ deposits from the United Staies Bank ,was Constitutional or otherwise, (The matter was carried to thé Supreme Court of ‘the United States, which * pody declared the act to be anconsti tutional. Whut did Gen, J%ck-on _ do when informed of their decision? id bo obey if by orderiug-the gov= tobe ernment meary Bank? Not « bit of it. He met the decision by declaring with ewphasia, ~ “By the eterpul I bave taken sn orth to support the Constitution of the United States as I understand it aud pot as dictated to me by the Su reme Court.” The whele American people applaiiied the accla:ation and said, ‘‘decksou is rigut’’ Tbe deposits were never returued to the United States Bank. Tuis is a woo bit of history which our Dem-) eors'ic friends wonld d> wel. to remember.—N. San Juan Times. _ Jaékson was a youd Ue uvcrat, and onewhom many of our De uo r tic Eastern Star. -8 Harmony Chapter,N :. 25, Order of Eastern Stur, Wis instituted at North San Joan, Sutardsy evening las, faud the officers duly installed. Such beiug the case, it is he duty of our city fathers to look sharp for defective sewers here, We recuma friends are proud to me tou as bav~. jing been a m-wber of their parry. We think they can revd be whule-bistory of Gen, Jack ou with profit, and _ then compare.it with Grunt 6 aud see etyraot anda osurper as it is tried _ to make him out to be, ; Troops in Wushington. The organs of ‘the White League Democracy are raising a terrible outery over the concentration of a few hundred troops in Washing on City. In so doing they beteny their own evil designs. No oue that does not contemplate a violent resistu:ce to the execution of the fuws need be alarmed at the presence of the whole army. Presideut Grant bas guthered troops ut the Naiionual Cupitol with the view of preserving peace, and protecting the officers of the). Government inthe exercise of their) lawful authority. The rage of the Democracy at this reasonuble precaution is only »m evidence that they have been anticipated in their treasonable desigus. In 1861 the South Carolinians considered the presence of Major Anderson aud bis bandfal —___— 9f seldies_in Charleston harbor a moance, and demauded their immediate withdrawal, It was very _oleat to everyone that the reason their presence was objected to was because violent resisanta ce to the authority of the Government hud been determined on. It looks very likethe same state of things exists now. No one ever objected to the presence of troops at Washington before, since the beginning of the wat, aud the how! now comes from the same class of persons that made such ap uproar iu 1861, when the] President declined to leave Government forts waprotected. The de_ feated conspirators have indulged in a good deal of wild talk as to what they intend to do in case Hayes epg “oounted in,”’ as they call is and they ought not to be surp.ised thut as old a soldier as General Grant is not caught napping when they undertake to carry outtheir programme. Placer Argns. ‘From the Earth te the Muon.’ We have just received this new book, by Jules Verne, the famous author of ‘‘Around the World in Eighty Days,” etc. It is u most interesting, indeed exciting, story of a remarkable attempt to burl a huge hollow projectile containing three persons, viz: Barbicane, Nicholl, Ardav, tothe moou! This projectile twas discharged from an enormous cannon, built at a cost of $2,500,000 and the wonderfal voyage began. The earth is far below them, the moon is only 300 ajiles away—a passing comet nearly dashes them to pieces: Like all of Verue's works, its pages are charming reading, and its prefuse and striking illustration, by Twentyeight fine engravings, greatly increasea the pleasure of its perusal. Al, though the ordinary price of this book is $2 00, yet the Lakrside Librabrary edition nc w before us is sold for only ten cents, complete and unabridged! -For sale by all Newsdealers or sent postpaid by the publishers, Donnelley, Lovd & Co , Chicago. _ A PRINTER stands when he sets and sets when be sbinds, and when be wishes to set wiih ease he always stands erect.
