Tue quartz indications continue to
be very bright in the vicinity of

that section informs us that he believes next spring and summer, owing to the probable great increase of

THE CHAMPION CRICKETERS.
The Capitals to Rest on Their
Laurels Till Spring—Invitations
to Play Refused.
The Capital Cricket Club of this
city held a special meeting Wednesday evening, for the purpose of considering the following invitation:
Grass Vauuer, Dee. 2, 1884.
“J. E. Carr, Esq., Secretary Capital Cricket Club, Nevada City—
Dear Sir—Upwards of $50 has been
subscribed here by parties:interested
in the game uf cricket, and a handsome trophy has been picked out,
consisting of a water pitcher and
goblets, to be suitably engraved.
Also, a fine silver goblet has been
promised by Mr. A. B. Dibble as a
special prize, the disposition of the
latter being determined upon by the
clubs contending for it. The conditions upon which the principal trophy is offered are these: Three match
games shall be played at Watt Park,
the winner of two to be entitled to
the championship of Nevade county
and the trophy, or the club putting
in.an appearance at the Park on two
successive occasions without an ep-'
ponent to be entitled to the same,
due notice having been given. As
the Capital is the only club besides
the Union likely to contend for such
prize, we have thou.ht you might uot
wish to play all the games at Watt
Park, but as the whole of the money
is put up in Grass Valley, the donors
consider they have a right to that
condition. We have suggested to
them that the games be played on
neutral ground, say at Glenbrook,
and they are willing to put up half
the money on that proposition, provided Nevada City will go the other
half, or $25, though they would prefer having the credit of doing the
whole themselves and having the
games here. Please let us know
your decision on this matter, as the
first game is fixed for next Sunday,
games to be played each succeeding
Sunday if practicable. Our club has
no disposition to.claim anything supposing ther: are no contestants.
‘Yours troly, 5

Secretary read _etelegeant received’
from Mr. Fletcher saying that Watt
Park was engaged for next Sunday
by the base ballists, and that if the
cricketers decided to have their contest there the first game would not
be played till the 14th instant.
To ascertain the eense of the meeting a gentleman moved the. acceptance of the invitation. This motion
set the various members to expressing their views. The mostof th m
were opposed to it on the ground
that the challenge sent to the Capitals recently by the Unions, and
which led to a game whe ein the
challenging eleven were fairly beaten, explicitly etated that said game
should be ‘to test the merits of the
two clubs and close the season.” It
was stated, moreover, that some of
the best players in the club had made
arrangements to be away from here
more or less of the time between now
and the end of the year, they having
supposed the season for playing had
ended. The motion was unanimoutly defeated. Thenthe Secretary w:a
instructed to address a communic: +
tion to the Union eleven than ing
them for their courteous invitation,
and also expressing a due appreciation of the interest in the game and
generosity displayed by the Grass
Valley citize sin tendering the trophy. The Secretary was alsotold to
say that the Capital Club would be
pleased toenter the lists with the
gentlemen of the Union Club as early in the coming season as the weather will permit,
On Wednesday evening, the 10th
instant, the annual meeting of the
Capital Club will be held at the
TRANSCRIPT editorial rooms, At
that meeting officers will be elected
for 1885, and other very important
business will be transacted.
The Capitals propose to continue
their practice games industriously
through the winter, so as to be in
first-class trim next season to retain the championship of the Coast
whenever th:y are called upon to
demonstrate their right to the possession of it. ‘ i

Speaking of the closing of the suspension bridge at this city for repairs, the Grass Valley Union says:
“*"t is a sort of an elephant on the
county’s hands, and might as well
be closed for good.” The county
has nothing to do with the bridge
any more than it has with the stone
crosswalks in the town of Grass
Volley, and our contemporary ought
to know it. All work done nowadays on bridges within the corporate limits has te be paid for out of
the city treasury.
