_ In the Superior Court of Yuba county
_ Wednesday morning the case of the
county of Yuba vs. Ah Tom and
_ even other Chinaman for. contempt
of Court, mining the Alpha Mine,
Nevada,county was heard. C.T. Jones,
who conducted the defense, argued
, that being foreigners and not underthe English language
they did not understand the
nature of the injunction. The case
was a very clear one, and Judge
Keyser said he had no doubt but that
they understood the injunction but
that-they took chances. Two of the
Chinamen were examined and pertended they did not understand English, but it was proved they did.
Ah Joe and Ah On, who understood
English, were fined $500 each, or to be
confined in the eounty jail one day for
each dollar. ‘The other six were fined’
$300 each, or to be confined one day for
Court, but sent a ‘poss’ who was in
consultation with the prisoners and
from their demeanor and a remark of
their attorney, it is probable that one
or two of the fines will be paid, if not
all of them. . Poker Charley, a wellknown Chinese gambler, said to an
Appeal reporter that the prisoners
had been working the mine for white
owners, Yee Sang doing the business,
the real owners promising to pay the
fines if they were arrested.”
