The performance given at the Thea.

demonstrated that Company’s right to
being classed as the best barnt-cork
organization that has visited this cit:
in many years. There are more than
a score of artists, and the entertainentrancing. The singing,“ dancing,

specialties; etc., are first-class in every
instance, and taken as a whole they
are generally conceded to be the best
given on the coast this year. There
was a large audience Saturday night,
and nobody who went had any bad

through smoked glass. The light did
not penetrate to the lagging of the
shaft. We had good breathing coming through the hose, and. while that
lasted we knew we were all right. -———-.
The cage seemed to scarcely move, .
Near the 1,000 level I heard a great .
roaring and thought the fire had got .

and we would not have been surpris1

a second; but the roaring was that of
water from the 800-level pump, whiel:
had become disabled. The water was .
falling down the western division of .
the main shaft. It sounded like
flames.
Atte feet above the 1,099 level the
cage suddenly stopped. We did not
know what was the matter, and gave}
the signal tu hoist, and siowly agcend,

A‘ the 960 level the electric wire was
eut, and the light went out. All was
dark. We felt asif we were going down.
All mincrs have this experience in the
daikness with closed eyes. I put out
my hand to feel the timbers, to find
which-way—we were going. T-aseured
my companion that all was right, for
he thought we were going down.
Getting back to the 700 station, we
found the hose to be too short. » Had
the engineer not:stopped on the instant of the signal the hese would
have snapped, and there would have
been two more dead men in the Idaho
“mines ees! Se ee
This morning I. went“down again
with Tucker, the diver. The same
experience was !-ad, except that between the 9CO and 1,000 levels the
helmets became ‘hot, and we felt as ii
we were being ‘‘hot-potted.” The
rubber around the wrists softened. A
quick signal to hoist was given, and
.
speed, The air felt good on top, and
the people all seemed pleasanter than
when we started down.
Tucker and Page, the two divers,
ure men of nerve and judgment.
I was giad toget out of the place I
did not fear to go into.
HE FOLLOWED SUIT.
My wife has been under physicians care for
two years, for what they called “liver compiaint.”” She would get some relief while
taking prescriptions, but would soon fall
back into the same drowsy, inactive state.
I got her a bottle of “The California Remedy,”
Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla. It did hér
immediate good, and when three bottles had
been taken she regained her old accustomed
health and spirits and is now as well as eve:
Seeing the benefit she derived, I used it-for
rheumatism with the result that I am now
entirely free from the disease with which I
had suffered for over a year.
