The transit of 1874 was wel! observed by the principal nations of the globe, and adequate preparations been made by the same governments to have ‘. may be the final result of the observations, it is of the utmost imyoriance that we should leave to our successora a complete account of the phenomena, just as the astronomers of the eighteenth century leit to us their records. The main object of a'l these elaborate preparavions is to obtain such observations as will enable the eun’s distance fromthe earth to be e-pressed in miles, As long ago as 1716 it was sugcested by Halley, that the transits of Venus would serve So determine the’ sun’s. distance, and the method has been tried three times—at the transits of 1761, 17.9 and 1874. ‘The transit of 1761 ws observed by 176 observers at 1° stations, and that of 1769 was ecoa’ly well obse-ved. From the data fenished by these “wo transits Eacke, ‘n 1855, determined the sun’s distance to be about 95,000,000 miles. This was acknow!edged to be the best determination possi from the observations. “Eut a5 tine wove on, and as aztronomes tried some of the other methods of obtaitrjag the sume quantity, it w.5 fouad to be too large a distance to be seco:ciled with these latter deterinir:tions. The transit of Venus of 1574 wa* looked forward to as likely to setile all these doubis, many of which were eapposed to have their origin in, the defecis of tre te’escopes used by the observers of the ejchteenth century. A corferenve of European astronomers was. held at Paris in 1881 to decide on the methods which should be emp!toyed to obneve the next transit. The results f-om the photogiapns were not known to them, and they decided not to employ photogrphs at the comiv transit. The AmerAmerican ‘this point we may catch a glimpse of ber agents says: ‘‘Should you at any time receive information of any forest tice being in progress 41 your district, you will at once proceed to the locality of the seme and use all possible means ‘o checl its in such a case, and the emergency be such that it would be impossible to inform this office of that fact and to receive special instructions, you are hereby authorized to expend a reasonable sum for such purpose ; but you will at once inform this otlice, by telegraph, of the number of pecsong 8o employed and the total probable cost.
