Towards the latter part of last year, business being scarce in the Bay, a ‘respectable boss mechanic accepted employment in t e Navy Yard at Mare Island. It became necessary, in consequence, for him-—to—remove his family -to Vallejo. His family, consisting of a’ wife and an cnly1 latter ‘being then a finely developed young woman of about seventeen years of age. ae In Vallejo they Saendiiney eung man in. business on his own account, by name Walter C. Willistun, who besame very attentive to the young lady, and made such desperate assaults upon her affection that the parents were speedily obliged to yield a reluctant consent to the union withoutdelay, having failed,‘ upon inquiry, to learn anything to-his discredit. The marriage was solemnized on Christmas day, 1871, and the parents oh acquaintance became much pleased with their.new.son-inlaw, as they found he was not onlya member of the Methodist Church, but a class-leader, and teacher, a member of the Young Men’s ‘Christian Association,;.a Good Templar, and an Odd Félow, and a member of various other moral and religious associations. He was, apparently, a paragon of excéllencies, quoting Scripture with the greatest fluency upon all occasions, and pretending to look with horror on all young men guilty of the (to him) heinous ofScarcely, however, had the honeymoon passed over the happy couple’s heads before he informed his young wife that he was deeply involved: in a thousand dollars immediately his brother, who he represénted to be his principal creditor, would shut up his business afid destrcy his prospects for life. -In great gricf his.young wife besought her motherto aid them, the husband agreeing: to secure the debt-by a bill of sale forthe amount. The mother, yielding to the importunity of the young people, came to San #ranaisco and raised the money by mortgaging a house she possessed here. On handpromised to give her the necessary papers on .the followimc day, bat made excuses from time ‘to time for insisted upon his wife immediately packing up her clothing, as he preposed to go to Cambridgeport, Mass., opulence, and where he could introduce “his young wife into society more worthy of her than California afforded. Giving his brother, to it appears. he had handed the thousand dollars, a bill of sale, he started off without further. delay. The mother, a3 a parting gift, guve the daughter a hundred dollars in gold with which to purchase clothing ete., on ber arrival in New York, suitable to the supposed condition vofthe husband’s relatives. Unfortunately the wife informed him thereof during the journey, and the result was that he got it frori her, together with a diamond riay,-which he sold and spent all bat twenty dollars of the amount before they reached New ‘York, paying .$15.a hundred for cjgars, which he smoked early and late. In New York he took his wife to see an uncle.and putting on mil{lionaire airs invited » youug female cousin to accompany him and his vwife+to the: theatre at a cost of nine dollars more, and then:took his ‘wife to a cheap lodging house to board, where she was in want of the commonest necessaries, and wrote a letter to her mother to send her daughter money to returnif shedid not want her to starve, as he could no longer syppart. her.
