Towards the latter part of last year,
business being scarce in the Bay, a

inquiry, to learn anything to-his discredit. The marriage was solemnized on Christmas day, 1871, and
the parents oh acquaintance became
much pleased with their.new.son-inlaw, as they found he was not onlya
member of the Methodist Church,
but a class-leader, and teacher, a
member of the Young Men’s ‘Christian Association,;.a Good Templar,
and an Odd Félow, and a member of
various other moral and religious
associations. He was, apparently, a
paragon of excéllencies, quoting
Scripture with the greatest fluency
upon all occasions, and pretending
to look with horror on all young men

his.young wife besought her motherto aid them, the husband agreeing:
to secure the debt-by a bill of sale
forthe amount. The mother, yielding to the importunity of the young
