The Annual Gipsy Encampment,’ wee annual Gipsy encampments have ° about them a breeziness, brightness, elation and interest that you will find among Gipsies of-the road at any other season of the year. These pilgriming people have been separated for a twelve month. Tho same vicissitudes as touch and tarnish us have been theirs, The same good fortuneshave glowed upon them. Every one is agog with reminis_ cential chatter, experience,: hopes, are all alive with overflowing friendshipa and good spirits. No-one-ean do ae ro for another. ‘Through it all, old @ ballads, roaredout by ‘some aia tinker at one end of the cam ne caught up here and thero until. in an instant, from -spaewife to chauvio, all are awhirl with song, ending mayhap in isterous demonstrations, laughter. —Every hour there is a new arrival of hooded wagons which have often trailed their slow way a thousand miles that their occupants may be with those already in camp. Then, if you do not. believe Gipsies have hearts and hold their ‘kind enshrined in them, you ‘should gee the rousing welcomes given. The whole turns out to meet and greet the neweomers. They are espiod and met at a dis tance and fairly vanquished with hand. shaking, embracos and kissings. Old women are surrounded and led, almoat carried. Gipsy children are al astride broad shoulders'and galloped along mer rily. Men and women are beset by scores of kin, who accompany them to the lowing camp fires kindled in their honor, esh horses aro quickly hitched to the ‘ dusty wagons and the tired beasts of the , road are lod to tether and tempting food. And whilo the wanderers are be irg gathered in camp, men, women and children radiantly set about.pitching their . tents, unpacking their wagons an viding every needed comfort with a afr ous hospitality putting all more preten, tious races to shame,—Edgar ‘Li Wake: man in Philadelphia Times, A Word for Criminal Lawyers, It is a mistaken impression people have that when a lawyer defends a criminal ho is fully aware of his guilt, and that all his efforts tend to disprove his guilt. It is almost as common as tho idea that when a man is accused of a crime it is not for him to prove hiaself innocent but . for the state to prove him guilty, It has been my oxpérience (and other gentlemen . in criminal practice with whom I have conversed agree with me) that the men I have defended who have been guilty have invariably told me that they were innoiis cent, and I have been unaware of. the true. state of facts until the state has proved them up, Criminals, that is the professionals, are suspicious, and they do not tell their lawyers the exact nature of their cases. They depend upon their friends to swear them out. They tell the lawyer what certain witnesses know, and these witnesses aro summoned. Often witnesses commit rank perjury, of course, but a decent lawyer knows very well that a perjured witness is liable to break and: . spoil the case, and so, if a witness is suse . > pected of lying, he is never put upon the * Ne stand. No, lawyers are an abused set of men. They have been burlesqued and reviled in fiction and drama and _painting, and anything will -be~-believed— of them~nothing sooner thin they suborn perjury. It is against their interest to do this, and if they won't give a lawyer credit for morals, perhaps they will for looking out for his own interest wes Vy “a A.
