An Old Soldier Whe Formerly Lived Mere Tells About the New Home Me has Found. Richard H, Bell, who used to live in Nevada City, is now in the Na tional Home of the Disabled Veteran Soldiers, which is near Dayton, Ohio. This brave old soldier writes “This is the boss of all the homes. There are over 4,000 inmates, and among them some of THE HARDEST CAsES That ever existed. We have had a change of managers, and have got the best manager ever in the house, He is very strict, but that is whet is needed. Some of the men, do not like him because they cannot lead him, but it ‘would take a cast-iron man to suit us all. He is an old regular hailing from New York, and his name is M. R. Patrick. . All the law-abiding men like him.; He ¢ death on intemperance, and well he may be. It is the greatest curse that ever existed in this or uny other country. The greater. amount of crime committed ‘is through alcohol. Some of the Western States are setting a good example by prohibitiag the liquor traffic, ‘*But [began with the intention of giving you a description of this place. There are thirty-three barracks, most of them three stories high. The larger ones lodge from 150 to 160 men, the smaller about 120. They are laid. off in streets forty feet apart, shade trees being planted between. They are heated by steam and lighted by gas.. We have a nice library and reading room, There are large CONSERVATORIES AND FLOWER Gardens. The hospital is as large as the main building at Milwaukee. There are large lakes to row on, a ten-pin hall, a billiard hall The latter accomodates 1,500 pedple. We are frequently visited by minstrel and dramatic troupes that charge ten and fifteen cents admission; according to the location of seats. The drop curtain to the stage has painted on it a view of the army marching up the Shenandoah Valley. The settlement also has a church, hotel and’ restaurant. Two railroads pass through the grounds, the fare to Dayton being ten cents. Our dining room seats 1,100 inmates at a time. The tables “have to be set three times at each meal. Mr. Jacka ka called at this office 'yesterday morning to talk over the article in that day’s Transcript which referred ‘to ~himself and certain other ministers of the gospel. He claims that we have done’ an injustice as far as he is concerned, on the grounds that while he spoke of the error in the announcement of his text he did not blame the printers but threw the responsibility for it upon his.own bad writing. Of course we bear the reverend gentleman no ill-will, and in fact never have entertained for him respect. It isa notorious fact that certain preachers, located in Nevada City from time -te~time,;-haveattempted to injure the interests of the Transcrier proprietors, Sometheir weapon, and sometimes they: have even resorted to slander. We have as-a rule submitted in quiet to these indignities, which amounted . to nothing more than an aggravation. Recently we concluded to pay all ag. gressors back in their own coin. The remark made from the pulpit by Mr. Jacka was as reported to us one which warranted all that we said about him. From his own showing. it seems he was judged wrongly, which fact it affords us pleasure to note, It is not-our desire to place any christian gentleman before the public in a wrong light. How Drift Mining Doesn't Pay. A few days ago the Derbec Blue Gravel Mining Company shipped to the Bay bullion to the amount of $9,500.. Thisis a drift mine and. is worked in the same manner that the Sacramanto Bee and —Marysville Appeal would like to have the Excelsior, Blue Tent, North Bloomfield, Milton, Eureka Lake and other hydraulic mines. The voint of this reference becomes. apparent when it is known that last month the expenses of the Derbec were $11,000, leaving the stockholders to pungle up an Irish dividend of $1,500. Drift mining pays—to leave alone, The Lingaras. ‘Considering the shortness of the notice given, there was a large audience at the Theatre Monday evening. The comedy of ‘‘Stolen Kisses,” although not first-class in point of literary . merit, was admirably rendered. Mr. Lingard in the dual character of ‘‘Placid Dawkins” antl “Grandfather Becks” proved himself to be a comedian of genuine excellence. The four gentlemen and five ladies supporting him are all good actors. The first-actdid not afford much scope for a display of their abilities, but the second and third were replete with fun that was fully appreciated by the audience. The company was billed to. appear last evening in Bairasd Boys," oe A Big Snowstorm. There was another terrific snowstorm in this part of the State night before last. and yesterday. The flakes were large and fell thick and fast, and as the weather was moderlate they packed down solid. The roads were not in the right condition and therefore the storm did not make good sleighing. The ditches in nearly every direction are blocked and mining is about suspended,— Most of the companies have enough water in reserve to clear their canals and flumes, and in a few hours after the storm has abated the mining boom will be under headway again. And Still They Come. Over one hundred persons ‘have voluntarily subscribed for the Trans cRIPT since its enlargement. As soon as we. can get at it we shalltake steps to have the upper and lower country thoroughly canvassed for subscribers, as we are determined, if possible, to raise the TkAnsorirr list to four or five thousand. We have a press that can handle that number very easily, and we intend that it shall do enoigh
work to pay for itself as soon as possible. OR A Rule That Works Both Ways. The Transcript always opposes by vigorous and honest means outsiders who come here for the purpose of capturing ‘that ' trade which by rights belongs to local dealers. In return we ask our merchants to stop sending their orders below for printing, and to advertise in the local papers. Then we shall know that the fight we make in their behalf is duly appreciated, ~ From the Upper Country. ‘Matt. Daily came down from Moore’s Flategesterday morning on runners, When he left the Flat the snow was about thred feet deep and McCormick of Grass Valley. was drifting there and at the Back. and bone House. At North Bloomfield it was only afoot in depth. Gaffaaa (wake time de DoING. Mrs, Dr. Murray of Iowa. City, and Mrs, Cartwright of Oakland, are on a visit to the family of Dr. Wm. I, O. Harris, business manager of the Lingard Comedy Combination, is a gentleman of most commendable qualities. He has ‘made’ himself. , quite popular here during, his, brief stay this week. When Michael Sullivan and‘ his bride: arrived at Moore’s Flat Monday they met with a cordial reception, In the evening the ‘‘boys” went to the hotel where the. venerable couple were stopping and called forthe happy groom. He was ‘too modest to show himself, but his wife came out and offered the visitors $2.50 to go and treat themselves with. ‘They retreated in disorder, but later in the night rallied and executing a flank movement captured the blushing Mike, They took him up in their arms and carried him to a saloon where they placed him on exhibition.
