There is to be a echool election:at. Grass -Valley soon, Mid the Bourd of Education have ordered the Clerk “to advertise the election jn the three locul papers, provided the said papers will publish the same for $6 in the aggregate.”” That is about as small’ a piece of business as any set of public officers ever engaged in, and the ewspaper publishers should sit down on the gentlemen, whea they formally make tle proposition, with an emphasis that will not be forgotten. If the schools were impoverished or were maintained by public charity, it would be quite a different matter, Advertising space in papers having the circulation of the Grass Valley papers i+ just as much a merchantable commodity as are the goods or labor which, constitute the stock in trade of any member of the Board. The Papers are expensive-institutions to ran, but 1 they should quit the town of Gris: Valley might as well go out of business. They are not, any more than is the public school system, objects o charity, but they are entitled to fair and decent prices for their services, the’ same as is any gentleman on that Board. The American Grocer says: While the orange was so highly esteemed by the ancients for its medicinal qualities, it is surprising how little attention the present generation gives to the many Virtues inclo:ed in this little golden ball of fruit. A prominent physician onee remarked that were his. patients to eat an orange or two every morning they would.regnire but little medical attenticn; for throughout the entire range ofdruits that have attracted the attention of the medical profession ar 4 means of alleviating many of the ills of mankind, there has been found none that has so many diversi!'ed uses as the luscious orange, particularly in cases of iow fevers and malarial complaint, and itshould more largely take the place of unpleasant drugs +0 extensively used, tothe great disgust of the patient. .No fruit compores in cheapness with the beautiful and luscious orange, and particularly so now that our country is raising the finest orangesin the world, the fruit selling ata price within the reach of the most moderate purse.
