railroad from Marysville, or a point
near that place, via Brown’s Valley

above, where it will cemmand the
trade of Sierra and Plumas ‘counties

The distance from Challenge Mills to
Camptonville via Bullard’s Bar, is
18 miles, with a good graded road
between the two places. From Nevada City to Camptonville is 23

road will necessitate the construction of a railroad from Grass Valley

the uatrow gauge company to retain

4 GOLD PLow.
An Apparatus for Gathering Gold
: from Occan sands.
The San Francisco Exchange says:
This machine is a combination of te
plow and the amalgamating ¢ ble.
1t is designed for the extraction of
Rold from beach sande, of which’
therg isa stretch of over 300 miles,
rich in mineral, on this coast, With
the exception of a nondescript dredging apparatus, built some years ayo,
that cost much ‘money and failed
miserably of its intended purpose,
machinery for this class of mining

water, where much of the richer deposit lies, was impracticable, owing
to the want of. suitable appliances
for. the purpose, Now, however,
with the L:ininger parent, the sands
may be operated upon at a depth of
TOO feet or more, and worked over
and over again until the last “color”

zontal tables, 12 feet in length. by 4
feet in width. These are placed one
above the other, one foot apart, the
upper table being placed about 18
iron frame work eight Deniston’s
electric amalgamating plates, each
4 by 24 feet, charged witli quicksilver on either side, ‘There is:a
space of six inches between the
plates on each table to allow the
sand and water to pass throu,h them,
and flow over the upper surface of
the p ates. Projecting downward in
front of each of the lower plates are
six pointed teeth, similar to cultivator teeth, but broader, The purpose
of these teeth is toplow up the bottions, the two parts of the lower table being connected by a strony
mits the machine to follow the un-.
the more readi-y to pass over any obstructions, Securely attached to the
forward part of the machinc 1s a
strong wire rope, to which, when in
Operation, is fastened “a powerful
wire cable, lea ling to the capstan of
the tuyabuve, which furnishes the
motive power, Underneath the lower table, bacx uf each row of teeth,
are placed four semi-circular , platés
of wrought iron. These serve the
double purpose of permitting the
machine to slide along the ocean botstroke of the plow-téeth. The framework is strongly built, of the best,
wrought iron, and weighs about
1,100 pounds,
In operation, the plow is lowered
to the ocean-bed, and is dragged by
asteam-tug of a 40-horse power—
ordinarily at the rate of four miles
anhour, The action of the teeth
upon the ocean bottom throws upward the. auriferous san . , which, in
passsing backward oyer and under
the amalgamating plates, is divested
of the precious metal. These plates
having 128 feet of surface, will amalgamate and hold large quantities of
gold, (at least 400 ounces,) and, by
repeated draggings, will take up the
gold to the last color,
The capacity of the plow is 40,000
tons of sand per day. -W. H. Leininger, the.inventor and patentee, a
pioneer Californian and a practical
miner, is a resident uf Salem, Oregon.
