CoprperneaD SPECULATIONS.—For ¢ long time the Democratic Prev and other copperhead papers of this State have pretended to be%the advocates of the Monroe Doctrine; but since the appointment of Gwin to an important governorship in Mexico, and the unmistakable evidence of friendship to the rebels displayed by the Maximi lian government, their tone has changed and they are now fighting the battles of Maximillian in the United States. If any additional proof is a to show that the copperhead party b discarded all that was good in Democ y, ond are now using the name _ to hide. their. baseness, it _ will be found in the inconsistencies shown by their journals. One day they are strong adhereiits to the Monroe Doctrine, thé next they are expatiating upon the glory and power of Maximillian's government. It is deemed of the most Fital importance that the Central American States should be preserved from the rule of white men that it may continue to illustrate the practicability and beauty of miscegenation, which is the leading idea of Mr. Lincoln’s Administration.” Beriah Brown believes thaf the real object of Sickles is to héad off the designs of Napoleon in Central America, and consequently such a policy is denounced as inimical to the interests of the white men, e. i. Duke Gwin, Maximillian, the Nasietints, and the ‘‘white man’s colony.” Should it turn out that the Press is mistaken and that Sickles’ mission is not to Central America, that paper will as bitterly denounce vur Government for permitting Maximillian., to * swallow up the Central American States’in his empire. ! ‘The copperhead party is actuated _ no single principle. Its whole energy is expended in a warupon the nation. They der fend murderers and rejoice in such acts as Early was guilty of at Chambersburg, where Union men are the sufferers. But let the , Government attempt to retaliate for such “ outrages, and the whole pack®f copperhead hounds unite in a how] against such acts of barbarity. Principle, where it has existence, is the motive of action, and men governed by it show by their consistency that they are earnest and honest. In society will be found a few men who have lost character, degraded wretches, sunken so deep in iniquity that no crime is black énough to east a stain upon them. Such men delight in . tearing down the reputation of those around them. They love'to see men of honesty and integrity. brought down to theirlevel.
