The Board of ‘Horticultural Commissioners met at Grass. Valley last
Saturday, and after having fully discussed the situation made to the
through the depredations of the codlin moth, the Board — the following address :
To.the fruit growers of Nevada
been respectfully asked what the
owners of fruit trees had to do this
year in regard to the codlin moth,
the insect pest that we’have to deal
against in this county, we would
simply but éarnestly recommend the
or loose bark, ‘old or new, is seen on
the body and main branches of the
apple, pear and quince, which scraping has to be done in the manner prescribed by the Board ; and when the
proper time will ain arrived, to
place bands of sack cloth or old carpet around the body: of the tree, one
band two inches above the ground,
and the other below the forks of the
tree, or still better an old sack being thrown into the. forks,.so as:te
entrap the larve of the codlin moth
at.the very time they. come out . of
the fruit to build their nest’; the
bands being examined every ten
days, from the 15th of May to’ the
Ist of September, and a last time
during’ the winter or after the picking of the fruit. Those two very
simple rules, we regard as the beat
yet devised for fighting the codlin’
moth and checking its ravages.
In regard to the washing of the
trees, we do not regard it as a preventive against the codlin moth ; and’
though it may be beneficial to the
tree, still we must rely principally
on the scraping of the trees and the
use of the bands, (
‘We would, besides, call the attention of owners of fruit trees to the
fact that last year’s crop was what

will be naturally short, and a great
deal shorted? wil) it. be if the. codlin
moth is allowed to multiply at pleasure. In view of this fact we would
most earnestly urge our’ people to go
to work at once, scrape off their
trees whenever they need to be
scraped, and to be ready by the Ist
of June to entrap the larve of the
codlin moth at the very time they
are preparing for another brood, aud

HARRIMAN BEATEN,
Ten Amateurs Mim One Mile
in Twenty--A Tour Up Country.
The running match at the Theatre
Satu. day evening was but moderately attended owing to the fact that
wonly one day’s previous notice had
been given of it. Among the audience were quite a number of ladies,
and the proceedings throughout were
of a most orderly character, as has
been the case with all similar éntertainments here in which Mr. Harriman has been engaged. “The conditions of the race were that the champion should ran 20 miles, the ten
amateurs to ran 2 consecutive miles
each, The track measured 39 laps
to the pile, and was nearly aquare,
The sawdust used had appeared dry
enough when firat laid, but the
warmth of the room soon brought
out the moistarg i in it, and the track
was thus rendered too slippery for
fast running. Shortly after 8-o’cloek_
Harriman and M. E. Oliver got off
for the first two miles, but on the
first lap the champion’s feet flew
from under him on a turn and he fell
headlong.. Picking himself Op as
soon as possible, but’ not till Oliver
had gained a lap, he started: off again
more cautiously and did not. meet
with another aceident during the
evening. Oliver gained 14’ laps on
him in the two miles, and was then
23 laps.” ‘Thomas Eddy gained a
sparse third, and Frank Vaugho
gained two-thirds. This placed.
Harriman 5 laps behind at the beginning of the 8th mile, but he re:
covered 1? laps on Owen Harrigan
and 44 on C. C, Watts, which placed
him 1 lap in the lead. Oliver then
returned for a second run and gained
63 laps. By this time the track was
so badly cut up and heavy that Harriman had to make every step with
extreme care, and he found it impossible to ‘‘let himself out” under the
circumstances, while the amateurs
being of smaller size did not seem to
2xperience—any--trouble~in—keepiny
their legs under them,.S.Ay Chas
gained 9% laps, Wm. Mooney 114,
and A. 0. Roy 1, making «the amateurs 274 laps, or abant nine-tenths
of a milé, ahead—at the close of the
20 miles. The contest was quite
spirited, the only drawback being
the condition of the track which
stretched the time ef the 20 miles
out to 2 hours and 45 minutes. The
music by Messrs. Guild and Foote
was a pleasing psraecon aorsgoaps of the
exhibition,
‘Mr. Harriman has_ arranged for
visiting the towns of North Bloomfield, Moore’s Flat, North San J uan,
Forest City, Downievitle and Sierra
will give the amateur runners of
those towns an opportunity to indulge in a series of friendly races
with him. We can recommendsMr.
Harriman to the people of the upper
country as a thoroughly reliab'e and
conscientious gentleman. He has
made many warm friends during his
recent visits to Nevada City, and has
so comported himself as to win the
respect of all.
Mr. Harriman will be accompanied
by C. Watts who is to act as general
manager forbim. Mr. Watts is favorably known ‘to many, having for a
long time Been clerk, at the National
Exchange Hotel in this eity,

Piquitous bill in the Senate, the twin
brother to which was slain in éold
blood in the Assembly last. week,
His bill, like Assembly maw Catter’s,
is ah un-statesmanlike effort to decapitate the greatest industry of Cal

scheme by which all of the mining
companies of the State can be crushed in one blow, being made joint defendants as contributors to a nuisance, The chances are that the
“band of Spartans” will abandon
Kelley on this proposition, and even
should they stay with him and fight
it out—for a hot battle is inevitable

“The noblest work of God is man.”
Who dare dispute it? Who ever can
That great immortal truth condemn,
Or place us forms that outrank men?
And. yet, that “‘beauty unadorned
Is most adorned,” by man is spurned;
For-ever since that fatal day,
When Adam gave the race away
By Eve induced, whose rarest charms
Ope’d up his ey¢s to falsealarms,
As he took in the “‘tree of knowledge,”
(No need had he to go to college)
The green-eyed monster on him pressed,
He then his Eve in fig leaves dressed,
As well’s himself. Andsince that slip
The Race is held in Fashion's grip.
Talent and Art may now combine
To robe the ‘‘human form divine,”
4nd make it what it ought to be,
A thing of beauty—joy to see—
In suitesymmetrical and shapely,
Only made by WILLIAM BAILEY,
Gallant knight of the tailor’s shears,
Who cuts at BARRETI’S, without fears
. Of ever making one misfit.
A red-hot fact, for never yet
He's missed it. He’s the ‘“‘cutter out,”
Who know#i for. sure what he’s about,
With other “Sours” to help him through;
He'll make the garments good and true.
They'll cut, and stitch, and press, and sew,
For coats do not by magic grow;
They’re wrought by busy fingers there,
And every stitch put in with care,
Time and patience. Tender thought ~
In,every button-hole inwrought
I see. There ‘n blending harmony
The buttons go in charmingly;
Then fold above some manly breast,
Who thinks he is supremely blest:Happy thoughts the hours beguile
Of him who shape or style e’er goes on,
And knows just how to put his clothes on.
I have no doubt as I am writing,

That every noble lad in town,
Hearing of our great renown, <
