The Sacramenté Union, which for
@ month past, and -beforethe defensé
‘was heard, by slurs and impatatioys;; ,
has done all it could to blast-the reputation of Colfax, now sets out. on
the task of clearing, up its mud. In
its issne of Thursday the Unian says:

that not one of. the Vice-President’s
old-time politieab friends rejoices

one of them could have felt a keener
sorrow at his seeming humiliation
than we did. For, if there is any
eriminal more execrable than he whe

of the:Governnient, he is that sic ‘
execrable who, occupying one ‘of th he
highest trusts the people Have to
give, accepts the bribe of the corruptors. That the Vieek President has
been able to remove all suspicion of
being such # ‘man, will bring j joy to

made by Colfax on Tuesday.””
' This custom-of condemning men
tnheard and denouncing as corrupt
indiscriminateiy, all who occupy pub-_
is entirely too commbn,
and none have indulged in the practice more freely than the Union. Its
declarations of friendship for Colfax
-would come with a good deal more
grace if it had withheld its judgment
until his case was: closed, and it
would not have bad:the general distrust to combat which it has helped
to create in the community.
