A Surprise to Him.
Grass Valley Union: Charles
F. Reed, of Yolo, who is one of
the most prominent farmers and
fruit-raisersin his county, who has
been visiting at Grass Valley and
Nevada City, said that although
he had been a resident of California thirty-six yeara he had never
before been in these two prosperexpre:sed, himself as surprised at
the evidence of prosperity he saw
on every hand, which was some:
thing quite different from the prez,
vailing idea that mining towns .
were in the process of decay. Being a fruit raiser he was struck
with the healthy appearance of
fruit trees and vines and the
strength of the seil, and fully realized that the foothill regions would
have an enduring prosperity from
the fruit interest ‘alone. He re-. j;
turned to his valley, home with
good impressions of the mountain
country, and particularly of Nevada county and its people.
An Opulent Itinerant.
It is stated by those who pretend to know that the grinder of
scissors and knives who has during the past few days been following his occupation about town, is
worth between $50,000 and $60,000 in coin and realestate. He}
has been for years engaged in
traveling through the State, living
as cheaply as possible, and not
forgetting to charge good round
prices. Ashe has done a thriving business he could not very
