~~ great: desert.a ~ eva Bully Branseript, TRUREPAT MORNING, FEB. 18th. city and Gannty. Official Press je ‘THe Ruaps+A perenne writing to the Marysville Express, gives an account of bis trip from Virginia by way of the Hens ness Pass to Nevada. In going tothe Territory he took the Placerville route and returp. ed by way of the Henness Paes. He says, =————qfter crossing “the Big "Frackee at Stout's . Bridge, welbore up a little nerth of west, theo turnisg up the river, followed-its-wind= ings for six miles. until we Teached=O' Neil's Station, situated on the “bank;on one of the . prettiest roads a stage ever rattled over.— At O'Neill's -the-nver-hends off tothe southwest, and soon forms into a canon of }reat depth. I-was told that the anticipated great Pacifie Railroad was to pass down through this gorge, opening out on the great plains —ofHambolit-—Just-below-this,-at-theBig-+Meadows, will be the great distributing point of all business, when the railroad is completed. for Virginia e'ty, Caraon city, Wasbve city, etc. At O’Neil’s we diverge from the Truckee river, and look wpor. it for “the last time, and continue west, andin a short time begin to ascend quite a hill. called Dog Valley Hill. We ascend it for a mile or mre, and soon come to Dog Valley, . a splendid valley, spread out on our right. 4° From Stampede Valley, says the eurres_pondent, we continued west, through sever. al valleys, all mostly level, until we reached the Little Truckee river, a beautiful stream, winding ita wny out from the Sierras to the Exsoon loatned that it was the ‘north branch of the Big Truckee river. We followed up and slong its windings some dis” tance to-ite head—Little Truckee Lake—asheet of water abaut ‘two miles wide, and .water I ever saw, and is situated on the Henneéss Pass. At this place I learned Dr. Webber lived. I must say I begrudge him ine beautiful home, We pass-on, and-in-a fow-minules we were on-the summit. Here the driver informed us was the aummit of the Hennesa Pass. We were all surprised, as we expected to see sone abrupt moun~ tain to ascend or cross, similar to that we found on the Placerville road. Dut to. my surprise I found a beautiful Igvel country, almost as pretty ns the Sacramento Valley. ‘I could see high penks a long distance off to our right and. left. Here, 1 must remark, the road from Virginia city to this point sure passes any mountain road I ever traveled over, for a distance of fifty-eight miles. For the first time we soon left the Truckee wa» ters, and began a decline grade on down the Yuba -waters, We traveled on through a beautiful cluster of Pines to Rosco's station. Thehée on and ina few mintues wo arrived at Jackson's Ranch, a point where ~ ~"the roads (ork, one branch of the Hennesa following dowir the Middle Yuba; vin Forest + city. Atthis point,we soon tovk the Henneas road which divurges to the southwest, and leading. direct to Eureka and Nevada city. This junction is six and a half miles this side of the summit. We now leave the Middle Yuba river, and bear southwest about seven miles, crossing a low divide on to Canon Creek, a northern tributary of the South Yuba river, and soon arrived at Bowman’sranch. At thia place we fornd every~ thing nice and comfortable, a4 we had found at the hotels all along, and ovur-wants readily cared for,, From Virginia city to this point ~ Tfound'a road thatfar-exeels the Placerville road. Bowwmaii’s ranch is situated on a deep _indented stream, about 82 miles nbove Neva. da city, and 71 or 72 milea from Virginia city. At this point we began to ascend tho hodvivet hill we had found. On the road between here nnd Eureka we -traveled buta short. distance before passing Basaras toll house, and then began the aeceut of the hill towards Eureka. Soon we arrived on the top of the ridge: and began to drop off down te Eureka, and. in a few minutes were in that~place. Here we began to find @ change in the road. We soon reached the Magenta flume, a structure 150 feet high, and the finest work of the kind I ever saw. At thie point we ran aguinet a big hill end a bad piece vf rond, . but abort .Weadofi ascended it; ad in a few minutes were at--Snow Tent Mill, a splendid place end fine house. We proceed. ed, and in a short time reached what is called the Backbone, which is very properly nam. ed. The ridge narrows down like a cornered _ file, and resembles a crater formation, The eit ploge at whith we errived was Leke Ny City.. At this place we struck the Sonth, Yuba, a deep indected stream infront We soon deseended.on a beautiful road, “but rather steep, to the ridge, where we found a narrow gorge. We passed on, and were soon on top of the hill, south of-the Yuba river.— This isa bad hill, and-doubdtless will be leit out when the new rosd-is completed. We: pro¢eeded, and in a short time were in Nevada City, and tomy surprise found it look: “ing fine, although it sdffered greatly by the fate fire. I-must say that for energy and enterprise it reminded me of Virginia Ger: EASTERN Newn.—The following telegram dated.
