THe Naval OFrrice:-—We are—informed by telegraph that E. G. Waite,
formerly of this city, is likely to be
~==“gppointed Naval Officer-at San Francis}
¢o, He is recommended by Sargent
and his claims will no doubt be urged
‘by Cole}, while Gorham will probably
make no contest against him. Wecan
say for Mr. Waite, that if appointed he
will conscientiously discharge the duties of the office, and that his appoiitt+
ment will be pleasant not only to his
political friends, but even to those of
the opposite party who know his sterling qualities as a man and a citizen.—
No truer man can be found on the
coast.
THE Roans.—Marker’s stage came
through from Washington yesterday for
the first time since the storm. The
Moore’s Flat and Eureka road is now
opened as far as the former p!ace by
English & Weils, and they are making
their regular trips. Colby § stage also
runs regularly, and the Colfax arrives
“on time.” The stage men deserve
credit for the manner in which they
‘have battled against the elements, and
their promptness in making the connections on the various lines of travel *.
-MusicaL.—A quartette of amateur
musicians has been organized by the
young men of this city? and they will
sing several songs at the dedication
party at the Waushington School.
Walter Mead, who isaw fait in alt matters of music, is among the party,
which alone is sufficient guarantee that
the music will be excellent. We hope
that the “Flying Trapeze” may be included in the programme of songs.
COMPLIMENTARY PanrTy.—Weacknowledge the recei,t of an invitation
toa complimentary party to be given by
the Eureka Social Club of this city, at
Yemperance Hall, on the evening of the
25th of February. ~Excellent music
will be furnished and the Eurekas and
their friends will, no doubt, have a
grand time.
