THURSDAY MORNING, FEBRUARY 2./
LOCAL MATTERs.
Scarcrry of FLour.—For some time.
past it has been impossible for the Nevada
Flouring Company to. obtain grain enough
to keep the mill'in operation. Since last
October they have been compelled to_purchase grain in Sqn.-Francisco as the supply . .
at all-nearer points was exhausted. We
are Thformed by a gentleman who is posted
on the subject, that the only places where
Jose mills, situated as they’arein the midst
ofa large and exceedingly productive district,
are.compelied to draw upon San Franeisco
for grain. A large amount. of wheat shipped for the Nevada Flouring Mills is now at
Lincoln or Neweastle waiting shipment.—
We have no doubt thatwheat is stored in
various parts of the State. which is net—at
present available from ‘the fact that owners
are holding for higher prices. In other.
tors who manage the markets to suit themselves, The prospects now ate flattering

Along the San Jose valley the hills will be
cultivated to the summits, and throughout
the entire State the highlands will produce

thing, may hold on aliitle tog long.
CHEROKEE.—A large number of. claims
located near Cherokee, are now being
worked, and great quantities of gold are beare said to be taking large:a mounts out at
each “clean up.” Considerable interest is
alsu manifested in quartz, ‘at this place.—
Several leads are being “prospected in the
neighborhood, and the owners hope for good
NoT THE NaME.—We are assured by a
gentleman, thas we committed what would
be considered by the-citizens of Gold Run,
Placer county, an “unpardonable sin,” in
designating that town by the name of Dixie.
The Post Office in the town is named Gold
At the last election they polled 80 Union
votes to three Copperhead. We cheerfully
apologize for our mistake, and shall hereafter’ call that town by its proper name,
Graxpd Batu.—A Grand. Ball_will be
given by H. €. Dickinson, on the 22d of
February, in this city. Temperance Hall
has been secured for the occasion, and arrangements have been made to have the
room comfortably fitted up. A splendid
supper and excellent music will be furnished
for the occasion.
VARIETY STOkE.—Mr. A. Blumenthal
has purchased the stock at the old stand of
R. Michalsky, next door tothe store of Geo.
E. Turner. He has on hand a large stock of
cigars; tobacco, toys, fruits, nuts, candies and
fancy goods. ‘These are offered at low rates.
‘Late STaGe.—The Sacramento stage,
due here on Tuesday: night, did not arrive
until 12 o’clock yesterday. The horrible
condition of the roads is the cause,
THE Hook & LApDpER.—Members of the .
