children who while stooping over their
their minds are planting in their eystems:the germs of consumption or other
diseases of like nature. It is true that
systems of physical training are adopted in a few of our schools, but these are
exceptional cases. The rule is that the
teachers from long continued sedentary
life become averse to exercise'and therefore neglect the training of their pupils;
and in too many instances parents are
apt: to think that hours taken from
the book for physical truining are foolishly spent. But this is a great blunder and in many cases is a cruel one.—
It has been demonstrated by those who
have studied the subject, that a strong
healthy body is essential to a sound
mind. The relations between the physical and mental organs of men are so
close that the former cannot be injured
~ without injury to the latter.
The exeréises upon the play ground is
not sufficient, for in them, many of the
children do not participate, and many
of these exercises are not calculated to
develop the chest,.'Che only proper ex*
ercise is that which has been found to
bring into play the entire physical system, andfor which instructors may
find directions in books relative to the
subject. The young ladies especially
should engage in this kind of exercise,
and if school trustees and officers will
see that the system of physical training
is adopted; and teachers require pupils
not only to get the 1 8, but to observe the laws of health we shall have
stronger bodies and sounder minds
among coming generations. Now that
the new school building is ready. for
use, the children might all be assgm-bled in the large hall and for hdlfan
hour in the morning and evening session engage in singing and calisthenics.
In our system of education, for the sake
seo to it that while théir minds are
stored with useful knowledge their
bodies are made strong and héalthy.
An investigation of the laws of health
would, we are satified, prevent half the
pain and sickness of the world.
A WELL known physician of San
Francisco, asserts, says an éxchange,
fered a premium of $500 for a grass fed
cow (or half a dozen of them), naturally
having the kine pock disease, such as
Jenner first derived his kine pock virus
from—San Francisco would long ago
have been free from the scourge which
which has so long afflicted her. Nor is
it yet too late for this importgnt step
to be taken. An advertisement offering a good round price for such a cow
would bring niore than would’ be required; andthis—virus, two or three
times removed, would ‘be an effectual
and positive preventive against the
dreaded disease.
THE “Girt” Business. — Messrs.
“Hinders & Kast, boot and shoe dealers
of San Francisco, were arrested on the
complaint of Mr. Elias Levy, in that
city, on Friday last.” In common with
other retail-boot_and shoe dealers, this
firm has advertised that they gave
prizes to persons purchasing goods from
them exceeding in value two. dollars,
and this is held to be in violation of the
statutes in respect to lotterivs, gift enterprises, &c. Itv'is the intention 1 to ninke
