eS NEVADA CITY. CALIFORNIA. ~ WEDNESDAY, FEB. 24, 1869. & DEDICATION oF THE WasHINGTON building being about completed, was dedicated on Monday night, and the ‘entertainment was, in every respect a Somonaeeided success. Tho hidst Sanguine were agreeably disappointed by the universal turn out. At ten o'clock. the crowd was variously estimated at from ‘one thousand to fifteen hundred, including men, women and children. Every room in the commodious building was densely crowded. The assembly hall, which is 56x60 feet was so crowded that it was next to inrpossible to dance with any pleasare. The two school rooms adjoiniig, which are con— nécted by folding doors, were used, one for tableaux and the other forthe en— “ tertainment* of those who didnot dance, and both were thronged with people. The rooms down stairs were used for dressing rooms and dining hall. The dancing commenced a little after . 8 o'clock and continued to “early morn.” Every one was surprised at the large crowd, and the three large tables in the dining ball were inadequate for the ac_commodation of the people. The ladies, after working for five or six hours, and resetting the tables half a dozen times, were compelled by the pressure to abanbe 2) SES Mien aes don their work and let the hungry . people in tosupper. The food was am“ple, and had so large a crowd been ex“pected, another room might have been fitted up for a dining hall. Many of the ladies upon the committees. were completely tired out, and forthe sucthe greatest praise:--Those-whowere disappointed or inconvenienced will of course know that under the circumstances it was utterly impossible to please __ every one.‘During the evening the audience lie~ tenéd to an eloquént and appropriate dedicatory speech from Judge Reardan, in which he spoke of the magnitude and importance of public education, and said it was peculiarly appropriate that _an edifice of that character should be dedicated on the anniversary of the birth of Washington, who would himself, could he have been present, . been chief among those who rejoiced that so fine a building had been erected and _ was dedicated to so noble a purpose.— He then gave a brief history of the systems of education, and the growth and progress of the’common schools of this country, -He gave a short sketch ofthe origin and progress of the construction of the new school building, and paid a merited tribute to the Trustees, Messrs. Gregory, Caldwell and Waite who conducted the business, and the people of the district who taxed themselves to erect the building.— He spokeof the absence of Mr. Waite Who was ove of the originators, and ot the other Trustees who sat behind bim _during the address, To the’ young he gave words of encouragewent, in the pursuit of knowledge, telling them that the road was rough and difficult at first, but with each step in advance it became more pleasant and agreeable, until the clouds and doubts were dispersed, and the industrious students were rewarded with the full understanding and mature mind. The address, of which we have only attempted to give a brief sketch without using the words of the’.spéaker, was listeneu to throughout withthe closest attention, and at its conclusion. Judge Reardan was heartily applauded. Financially the affyir was-a signal success, and this only demonstrates » that our people are always ready to aia in the causeef education, At the door 264 tickets and one half ticket were “taken in, making $792 50, and from the sale of cakes $26 00 were received. Other tickets were undoubtedly taken net receipts will probably be in the neighborhood of $300. _. SeHeoL _Bur.pinc.—The _ new. school . ~ as attained they are entitled toy by persons who-did not attend, and they “Tue salaries of the Judges of the OliioSupremé Court have been increased ‘ from $8000 to $4000 per year. £3 ‘the courage to refuse ! of a Vigilance a New York is found in a curious pe from justie in that city of one Williamson. It appears that.in October last Willamson hired a basement ander a store in Canal street; and succeeded one night ing into the store overhead. He got ‘together $5,000 worth of goods, but was arrested while carrying off his -plunder.__ The papers_in his_case were butjust before the last election one_Al.derman Coman took them away, and nothing mrre was heard of the case.—_ Lately a couple of men attempted to rob the Park Bank in broad daylight; one of them was caught, and. proved to be the identical Williamson, who, when for burglary. The New York papers are now asking how he-was let loose on the community withoat trial.;—but—nobody seems. to know, or, if they do, a discreet silence.on the subjeet is preserved. me THe near approach of the 4th of Mareh-seems to have endowed -President. Johnson with an extraordinary accession of backbone. One Enright; a convicted. defrander of the United States Revenue laws, has applied for a pardon, and the President actually had Let this be set down on the credit side of Mr. John-= son’s account current with the Ameprican people. He has heretofore pardoned every criminal he could lay his hands upon; from-a-gang of Fennessee counterfeiters to the defunct Booth, (so far as he was able,) but at this last moment be has had “grit” enough to deny a prison delivery to a revenue thief. THe Grass VALLEY Yourus.—The National of Monday has the following : “During the first part of the school-exhibition given last Saturday night, not only the audience, but the performers, were greatly annoyed and disgusted by the rowdyish conduct of a gang of misbehaved brats in the gallery. These ignorant louts, none of whom, we dre proud to say, are pupils of the public schools, yelled, whistled, gabbled, and in various ways disgraced themselves and disturbed everybody else, until Mr. Potter finally quieted them. A policeman armed with a cowhide should hereafter be intrusted with the duty of keeping order among the young rascals. THE FINANCIAL QuESTION.— While . the people have been discussing the policy and the best plan of returning to specie payments, the Supreme Court has, by its recent decision, in which the same theory. is adopted as that of our “Specific Contract, Law,” virtually solved the problem by declaring -that both greenbacks and gold coin are legal tenders, and that specific contracts to pay in gold. must be so paid. This, so far as commerce is concerned virtually restores business to. a coin -basis, and it will not be long beforé the contracts of the government-will_be of the same na= ture. INDIANA has six, hundred thousand children between the ages of six and twenty one years, of which 436,000 at teaded school last year. The common school fund of the State is $8,250,000, and the school property in the State is worth $6,000,000. ONE day last week a wonian was discovered perambulating the corridors of the White House, at Washipgton. She said that the Almighty had delegated her to cut short the vital career of President Johuson, She was taken out of harm’s way and properly cared for. A REVENUE agent in Cincinnati, visiting a suspected distillery, came upon ene room marked “private,” and securely locked.” After some little delay he managed. to effect an entrance, only to discuvera young man ona bed in the worst staves of small pox. A part of the caucas appeared to favor immediate repeal and would not bé bound by any caucus against this resolution. The non-repeal movement is probably in the interest of Senators who want office and don't think they-can obtain it if Grant is left From the Heraid we learn that the President has purdoned Dempsey, the stationery contractor, who horsewhipped Dunean’ for making yevalations which led to the breaking up of Dempsey’s contract with the Governuiént. Preparations are being made for the public reception of President Johnson on the occasion of his return to—Ten nessee. Another revolution in Mexico is expected to shortly take place. the second in command or the Cuban revolutionists, has been killed. OnE-W HEELED V ELOCIPEDE.—Passing by the carriage shop of Harry Bernard the other evening, says the Sac Tramento tecord, we were-astonished at+ the appearance of a nondeseript vehicle,
if vehicle it could be called. On examining it we found it a veritable onewheeled velocipede, not unlike “Schnitzerle’s Philosopede”’ that “vent mitout a vheel in front und hadn’t any pehind.” It is an immense cage, made of hickory and securely bolted together. It is spherical shaped, only flattened at the axis. It is about eight feet in diameter one way and four feet the other. The ‘tider sits on on a swinging seat, hung from the cranks’ on the inside of the wheel, and by turning the cranks propels it forward, There are three rims running around the outside, which give a width of about eighteen inches on which it travels, In case of it falling, which velocipedes are so liable to do, it is impossible to step out on the ground, but the rider must hold on to the seat as Wellas he can, turning end over end» until it ceases rolling. None but avery agile person and those not subject to dizziness should-attempt to ride it. It is much the same as rolling a man in a barrel. Altogether it is the “rummist” looking machine we ever saw. However, with a few alterations, we think it practicable to gain a high rate of speed on it, especially going down hill. THERE are 800 applicants for a posi-— tion of gate keeper of the Auburn N.
