Anonymous letters written to the
patrons of a certain Nevala City
gentleman, witha view to injuring
his business, have been citculatiny
quite freely through the postoffice of

ate written from motives of revenge.

A Wagen Road Preferred.
‘The Union dees not appear to favor the proposition to raise a fand in
order to have the First Artillery Encampment held at. Glenbrook. It
mys: ‘It issuggested here that, if
the eitizens of Grass Valley have any
money they wish to subscribe in a
public way that it would.be devoted
toa more practical purpose in raising.& fund for building the proposed
new road from Grass Valiey to Deer
Creek.” Judging from the above,
Nevada OUity wil: have to subscribe
about all the money that is raised,
which-would-be-unfair.__Grass-Valley would derive nearly as much
benefit as this city from the encampment, andher citizens are as well
able to give as ours.
Another Petitien.
Chas. McElvy was yesterday engaged in circulating a petition to the
Governor asking that the sentenee of
Ah Look, the condemned murderer,
be reprieve for thirty days. The
effort to obtain the signatures of the
sentencing Judge and the District
Attorney was uusuccessful, anda similar back-set was experienced in numerous other quarters. The petition set forthseveral claims that
would nf bear investigation, among
them being one that Ah Look was
eonvicted solely on Chinese evidence,
whereas the fact is that there was a
Teasonable amount of, corroborative
white testimony.
