*: Itemssin Brief.” °
By the Record-Union we see that
‘there is to be a regular’ Crawfordto the municipal election in Sacramento, at which a Mayor, Auditor,
Assessor, Collector and one Fire
Cottimissioner are to be chosen, as
well-as a City Central committee
Yor the ensaing year. Following are
‘thé remarks ofthe paper concerbing
the pledges, opinion of the system,
‘ete.:—The test admits to patticipate in the primery ‘‘all persons who
lican party, and will pledge themselves to support the ‘nominees of
the primary -at the city election.”
Although this test is uvusual in
friends appear tu be satisfied with it. ;
In effect, it renders the primary eleccity election, For the principles of
the’ Republican party having been
adopted by the Democratic party at .
Baltimore in 1872, members of. this
organizatiou are free to take part un-.
‘der the call for the Republican primary. The second clause in the
test—the personal pledge to support
‘the nominees at the city election—

A memorial signed by over a thouNew York was recently presented
“to thé Board of Charities” and Correction, asking it toassign one of the

The following paragraph is one}
telegraphic version of Congressman
The House has passed Page’s_bill
as reported by Mr. Myers, of Peunsylyania, to prohibit the importa-.
tion of Chinese coolies under con-.
tract, and of Chinese: women for
immoral purposes. ‘Lbe bill is, very .
astringent iu its provisions, and that .
portiongf itin relation to Chinese
prostitutes is as sweeping as the Cal-.
ifornia statutes. . Californiaxe in
Washington regard this os a great
triumph for Mr. Bage, and are loud
in. their praise of his persistent efforts. He eulogized the President,
Secrétary of State and Committee on
Foreign Affairs. The bill now goes: to
the Semate, and Mr. Page is already
‘canvassing that body.
The Marysville Appeal suys: ‘Our
‘city will be made lively this season he. .
cause of the necessities of the situation. There are to be expended
large sums en our levees, and this
work will greatly increase our labor-}.
ing population, The first public expenditure will be made on the Yuba
river bridge grade extension. Here
will be an’ expenditure ef many
thousand dollars. But the -great.
and beneficial work will be ‘incident
to levee building. Thid work is variodsly estimated at from $50,000 to
4$75,000, and this money must go in“to general circulation and be shared
‘equally by all interests, A flood
year is always a prosperous season.
We sometimes think that a country
not subject to periodical flodds is
‘one to be avoided:
Thomas B. Merry, formerly editor
‘of the Gazette in this city, is now
‘the editor and proprietor of the Coos
Bay News, published weekly at
Marshfield,.Coos County, Oregon.
Mr. Merry is writing a series of articles entitled ‘People I have met;
‘or, the Men and Manners’ of Early.
California.”” The productions are
graphic pen pictures of the characters selected four his subjects, eminently descriptive of the incidents
he narrates, and through all there is
much eloquence of expression. ~~~

Several persons hereabouts are
spoken of in connection with county
said that M. L; Marsh wilt be a candidate for Treasurer and W. J. Organ for Assessor, on the Republican
‘side of the house, and Bruce B. Lee,
for Senator, on the Democratie side.
We dow’t-‘know that either, of these
gentlemen will be candidates, but
we have heard their names mentioned in connection with the above
named offices.
It was rumored in town, yesterday, thata very rich quartz ledge—
the richest ever found in the county,
had been diseovered. in the Omega
Water and Mining Co’s. elaims at
Omega. The statements in regard to
its richness nearly equals the bonanza at Virgihia Gity. We inquired at
the Bank, where most of the property is owned, and learned that they
had heard nothing official in regard
toit. If there is any truth-in the
rumor, we shall probably learn all
‘about it when the stage arrives from
there to-day.
~Gen. John A. Seeley, of North
San Juan, wh#has been on the sick
list for the past few moaths, arrived
in this city yesterday. He comes
here for medical treatment, and we
hope soon to be able to state that he
is convateseent. Seeley is an ener-—
getic man, and it is pot a very easy
job for him to'give up to any disease,
but when rbeumatism gets a good
hold of a man he is bourfd to weaken,
