sum of mongy has been subscribed to
build a wagon road. Men have alward the mines, and a large force
are now at work, and promise to
have it completed next week. From
Belknap a xoad 1s promised in ten,
days, with regular stages, carrying
passengers, fast freight, mail aiid express. Town lots in Belknap range
from $500 to $10,000, and an immense boom is being experienced.
The Northern Pacific is interested in
the Belknap townsite, and is helping .
boom the place. There is some doubt
as to whether the mines are not
within the land grant of the Northern Pacific in which case the railroad
will have the naming of the principal town-sites in the gold. region.
Every industry will soon be represented in the mining district. One
Yealoon firm is-sending in 30 tons of
goods, with which to stock a wholesale liquor house, Sixty mules were
in town last night, and‘started with
these goods, They will go by the
way of Rath@rum,Coar d’ Alene and
tie Mission, part of the way by
‘sleighs and the rest by pack mules:
Drug stores, lodging houses, restautants aud_all other kinds of business
imaginable, will be ¢stablished _inside of two weeks, and all backed by
heavy capital. It is all folly to talk
of waiting six weeks before going to
the mines to start any business. The
fact.is it is already too late to get in
first with anything. * * * Regarding the mines, I have formed no
opinion as yet, though” accounts are
calculated to make one ‘s head dizzy.”

“A Minnesota man has pabeaited a
dam for use in irrigating ditches:
One end of.atsheet of canvas, leather
or other suitable material 19 attached
toa bar of. wood, which is: longer
than the width of the canvas, This
bar reaches across the ditch, the
ends resting upon’ the banke, while
the canyas lies in the ditch, with its
free end extended up stream and secured by pegs driven through holes
in it into-the ground, The water
pressing against the upper side of the
sheet bulges the middle portion
downward and presses the margins
against the bottom and sides of the
ditch, so that the sheet effectually
dams the ditch in a most simpl: and
ready.manner. By this plan the laearth danza is saved, the only things
secessary to do’ in this case being to
lay the device in the ditch and drive
afew pegs through the lower end
when damming the stream ; and for
taking"up the dam all that is required
is to take the bar in one’ hand and
pull pp the pegs by the sheet.
