( wood company of this city’ was held Tuesday evening, and the folJ.J. Lyons, Geo. E. Turner, J. H. Boardman, R Scanlon, B. Guscetti, J. T. Morgan and A. Sloan. J. H. Boardman was re-elected President, and J. J. ao Secretary. John Snyder, late of San Jose and one-of the principal own-. ers of the Mountaineer mine at this city, has succeeded H. G. Battey as Superintendent of that propMr. Snyder was raised a, farmer; and has not until now had any practical experience in mining; but he has a first-class crew of men under him, and being a hardworking man and good business manager will no doubt con‘duct. the mine to the best possible stamps in the mill (which -is equipped with six Frue concentrators) are being run night and day, the other five being used from time to time on the highest grade ofore taken out. Last Sunday a five foot ledge of excellent quartz was developed in the 300 level, and this in connection with the former developments makes the mine one of the most promising in the county. It has forsome time been a regular dividerid payer. The bulk of the stock is held by four residents of San Jose. _ The average thickness of the ledge in the Neversweat mine, Willow Valley, is 24¢ feet, with a streak of from 6 to 8 inches of exceedingly rich ore running through it. O. Mal has purchased three tons of this, paying $140 a ton for it on the dump. The Constitution-has a four-foot vein carrying a 15-inch ledge from which assays have given as high as $1,500a ton. It is estimated the 15 inches will mill something like $200a ton. The Constitutton ison Deer creek above the Deadwood and on the same bank. It is reported tH} the Derbec drift mining company will soon substitute water power. for steam in running the machinery. If such a step is taken their expenses will be materially reduced and the mine again placed on a dividend paying basis. This company pays out enough every year for wood for a few dividends to stockholders. If they" had had water power during the past big difference to the stockholders. The new mill at the Eagle Bird mine, Washington, which was made at-Allan’s foundry in ‘this city, is running. regularly and in the most satisfactory manner. The mine looks better and better with every stroke of work done. The ledge has widened to 153g feet, and every ounce of the ore pays for working. There are plenty more claims in that part of the county which will be just as valuable as the Eagle Bird when they have been as much developed. John Hippert came down Tuesday to purchase. another pump forhis mine—the Rocky Glen— near ‘Graniteville, the present pump not being of sufficient capacity. The Rocky Glen is producing well regularly, being one of the best claims in that part of the county for the amount of labor and capital expended on it. — Bonds. ~~ District. ‘Attorney nay Long yesterday morning filed’ an information against Jacob Webber, who a few weeks ago shot at Robert Gunnison of Washington in a quarrel about a fence. In the afternoon Jake furnished bonds in the sum of $1,000 with C. Walsh and Coleman Thornton as sureties, and was released from jail. Les; The New Shoestore. ee The Standard Shoe Company is now an assured fact, as some of the goods are here and others are expected on the next train. At the Nevada Silver Convention, ly held at Carson, some of old Nevada City men took quite @ prominent part in the proceedings. . Among them we notice the name of T. P. Hawley, foimerly District Attorney of this county, and now Chief Justice ‘of the Superior Court of that State. Also, Andrew Maute, who learned the printing business at the TranscrIPT office, and another, not the least of all by any means, was ex-, Senator Farrell, brother-in-law of John Cashin and George Fletcher. The Enterprise says an address prepared by ex-Senator Farrell was read, the manuséript covering over fifty pages~of legal. cap, and it was a yéry able, instructive, suggestive and comprehensive-contribution to the literature of the silver question. It exposed in ar_ingenious: manner all the fallacies of the anti-silver writers, their falsehoods and perversions. It was listened to with great at-. tention, and at the conclusion of the reading a vote of thanks to Mr. Farrell was adopted, and a motion also prevailed that the Legislature be memoralized to have 5,000 copies of the address, tozether with the proceedings of the convention, published in a pamphlet form for distribution in the enemy’s camp. nee EI The Camp Fire Committee. The committee appointed ‘on Monday-by. the-MexicanVeteran Association of this county to make arrangements fora ‘‘Camp Fire’ in which the Veterans and the soldiers who wore the Blue andGray will be invited to take part, I. J. Rolfe, Chairman; John Herzinger, M. Garver, of Nevada City ; George Carson, A. G. Peterson, 8. H. Dille and E. E. Appleton, of Grass.Valley; and James Hewitt, Rough and Ready. The committee intend to make the Camp Fire a decided success if energetic work can accomplish it. The time will be the 6th of June, or as near that day as practicable. First Artillery. Regiment.
The Sacramento companies of the First Artillery Regiment on Tuesday evening hada grand drill, review and dress parade in honor of the Governor and members, of the Legislature, and the Military Committees of both Houses inspected the armories and regimental headquarters, and were ntertained by the officers of the rigade ‘and regiment: » General Carey was in command. ~<After the exercises there was a dancé. That Big Fish. Some men, engaged in getting out wood at Incline, Lake Tahoe, report having had a glimpse of the famous trout that has been reported as having been seen from time to time in Lake Tahoe. They say it was about. forty feet long, and was moving through the water, with itsdorsal fin expanded, at the rate of about a mile a minute. caer ne i en a Sword Piesented. The Tidings says: ‘‘Capt. J. A Rapp, of Nevada City, has presented Henry J. Bush of Grass Valley, with a handsome sword, the one we believe that the Captain unsheathed in ’61 and bore to victory. Upon the shining blade of the sword is. engraved many of the glorious battle names of the late war.’’ Scott’s Emulsion of Pure Cod Liver Oil, with Hypophosphites, Foo rapgeaa Desi rable for Chilren. A lady physician at the Child’s Hospital, at Albany, N. Y., says: ‘‘We have been using Scott’s Emulsion with great success, nearfrom bone diseases and our physicians find it-very beneficial.’’ W. T. Heis now going to San Francisco to purchase the largest stock ever brought into the county, and upon his return will begin a war in dry goods, clothing, etc., that will be of great benefit to the buying public. It On Account of the Tourmey. In order that all the members may attend the Athletic Tourney at Hunt’s Hall, the weekly meeting of the Nevada City Debating Club has been changed: from Friday evening to to-morrow evening. The practice of carrying concealed weapons in Georgia has been broken up, by_a_law passed by the last Legislature charging $100 to dealers in pistols and“ recartridges. Rather than pay the additional charge, nine tenths of the traders have dropped this feature of their business. The effect of the law has been to restrict the sales of the obnoxious articles to populous’ places. The license amounts to a prohibition. All in the Line of Nature. There is nothing in the line of magic or mystery about that wonderful and popular mecicine, Parker’s Tonic. It is simply the best and most scientific combination possible of the essential principles of those vegetable curatives which act powerfully on the stomach, liver, kidney and blood.
