ae \ ferry McMahon and John Potter THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT. NEVADA CITY, CAL. . Nevada Cnaty Oficial Press. Fstablished in 1860, ee -o— BROWN & CALKINS, Proprietors. FRIDAY, FEB. 3, 1882. gm ares NEWS. Wm. Dampier, Treasurer of } Marin county, died at San Rafel January Sst,” s Work is about to be commenced on the a iaag and Columbia Railroad, in Oregon. Three Indians were killed January Sist by a train on the Carson Railroad jumping the track. Lieutenant De Long’s party has been traced to a definite locality on the west bank of the Lena. fie Seventh Day Adventists have an educational Institute > gtHealdsburg, Sonoma county. Itis thought the European financial troubles will cause the exportation of about $20,000,000 from this ss & a fight at Eureka, Nev., JanuSlat, in which the former was ~ fatally cut with a knife. © A ew Miller at Disco, Illinois, in an attempt to kill her hushand, fire to her own clothing and_burned herself to death: Snow fell along the foothills Janusry 8st from _Yreka to Shingle El Dorado county, and rain fellin the valleys as far “south as Los Angeles. \ Robert and John Carroll brutally murdered with\ pitchforks Titus Hoyt, a respected farmer, at Winona, Minnesota, with whom their father was in a dispute. The three Carrolls, who are a hard set, have been arrested. ‘Itis rumored in San Francisco that Blanche Douglas, the woman implicated with the Malley boys in the’ Jennie Cramer case at New Haven, Conn., is the widow of a prominent United States official: who died suddenly in that city several yearsago. . . Dennis Kearney has organized San Francisco the First Branch o the Twelfth Ward Workingmen’s Club, with sixty charter members. Ata meeting held January 31st, these officer were elected: Wm. Wright, President; Isaac Fish, Secretary; P. Ryder, Treasurer. Kearney addressed the meeting at length, and urged those present to organize and agitate the-Chinese question, so that Congress may be forced into passing a bill to give the people of the Pacific coast some relief, and check the tide of Chinese immigration. The village of Rock Falls, Ill., is . in somewhat of an uproar because of a@man and woman named Seymour having beaten, skinned and otherwise brutally misused the seven year-old daughter of Mrs. Boiler, whose husband is in the insane asylum, The girl was working for the Seymours, but now has been taken away and is under physicians’ care. Twenty or thirty, persons visited him, but he escaped with his wife, and diligent search failed to discover them,:: The methods of cruelty employed upon the innocent child are too diabolical to mention. Probably the most disgraceful and disgusting thing connected with the entire Guiteau case is the proposition made by a Philadelphia chemist and accepted by the relatives of the cowardly assassin, that, in case he is hanged, his body shall be given to said chemist to be by him preserved _ and exhibited through all the principal cities of the United States and Europe, the relatives to bear none of the expense but to receive onehalf of the profits. From city to city the carcass is. to be carried in a patent refrigerating car, built at a great expense, and the places of exhibition are to be the most commodious halls available. i cndeutamnuamnta:anectennae eee Tax San Farncisco Daily Report. of Wednesday contains an interesting description of an automatic advertising clock, the-invention of Wm. Afporn TER FOR SAN FRANCISGO PAPERS, (G, V. Tidings.} The leading newspapers owe it to people to instruct their reporters not to invade private residences for the purpose of unveiling private matters and feelings. If the reporters get no such instructions the persons intruded upon should defend their castles to the last extremity—and at. the toes of big boots. ~ THE LANDSHARKS RESPONSIBLE, {8. F. Laily Report.] The Nevada TRANSCRIPT asserts that the agitation against hydraulic mining was started and is supported by-land speculators, who, by creating a scare, are endeavoring to bear the value of farming lands in the valleys, From the character of the Mtics employed inthe fight and of some of the men engaged in the onslaught, we are of the opinion that our Nevada county contemporary is correct in its assertions. THE WAYS OF RAILRQAD MAGNATES. _ (G. V. Union.) The ways of the railroad inagnates are peculiar. They will fight with apparent vindictiveness for a time, and then hefore the astonished public can realize it, will kiss and become the best of friends. Since all the rival lines have ‘“‘pooled their issues,” there is no hope that California will have any benefit from railroad competition unless'the C. B. & Q., and the Denver and Rio Grande will act independently of all entangling alliances, and extend their lines directly through to -~ Pacifie coast.’ A Tonching Incident. An old soldier who ‘‘was thar” hands us the following extract from a letter written by a Union officer to a friend in San Francisco during the war: ae TI noticed a beautiful incident, in the reports which came up from Kentucky, of the fight in which our lorious McCook and his bully Cincinnati Dutchmen put the rebels to flight at the point of the bayonet. Alig the victory, the “Second Minne: were marching to their quarters, and as they passed the tent of Gen. McCook, with the banner of ‘‘beauty and glory” waving at their head, their splendid band played Hail Cohimbia, with a will: Be the, General’s quarters stood two rebel officers (prisoners) a Colonel and a Major, who were so at affected with the scene that they burst into tears and wept convulsive ly, declaring that, although Sey had bee impelled by circumstances to fight against it, they still loved the old flag—and. God speed the time when they should again take their proper places, to the rallying ery of Union and Liberty! \ BY Evidences of Prosperity: [San Jose Mercury.}\ Our sprightly little mouatainu contemporary, the Nevada TRANSCRIPT, is out in a pew dress, enlarged’ sa ote Seymour for the purpose of lynching . America’s Finest peehiscion GEN, 129 California Street, cor Front, San Francisco, Joun L. Burns, Agent, To THe Trape.—Practical experience has demonstrated to us that the trade requires a choice old Bourbon for immediate use. For it is well known that whisky that is ab: solutely pure requires-age, care and attention, and our old Davenport, whisky possesses all the above qualities. The grain used in the distillation of our J. H., Davenport whisky is always selected from—the’ finest, richest and best grown in the State of Kentucky. The ‘water is drawn from one of the finest limestone springs in the State, the peculiar properties which have gained for Kentucky whiskies such world-wide celebrity, This process makes our Orrice or Scnuurz & Vos. ma : 1 J. H. Davenport a-pure, hand-made sour mash whiskv, and we claim that for delicacy of flavor, purity and medicinal qualities it stands unexcelled. -Yours Truly, ‘Scuvirz & VonBarcen. AFTER an experience of ‘many years I have at last succeeded in finding a whisky (the J. H. Daven port) that is absolutely pure and free from’ drugs of any kind and which I can recommend for medicinal purposes, I will keep this whisky for sale in future. Call and try it. _ It-is pure. . You will like it, Ds. J. M. Maynine, Drocaist. Grass Valley. STRAIGHT WHISKY. As a t deal has been said about John L. Burns and Davenport whisky in the Pranscript, it. will not be out of place to mention the fact that Mr. Burns has made one of the most important sales of fine liaa Pa effected in the county, to ike Hanley of Nevada City. We understand that Mr. Hanley has made a purchase of some of ra most expensive straight whisky that has ever come into the county. John L. Burns, the celebrated agent for “Davenport,” hasbeen — fortunate in making such a fine sale to such a ruapemnit gentlemen as Mr. Hanley, who has the reputation of keeping tho finest liquor in the county.
