SThe. énual ane of Wells, . dee &Oo., for the year ending December 3st, 1882, showing. the yield of precious metals throughout . the United States, has recently been distributed and it conveys a wartiing to us of California which we should heed if We Wish'to remain the principal gold ucing State of the Uniou, ahd ee as also say’ of ‘the world, This circular gives the total gold product of the Union as $26,974,872, orinround numbers twenty-seven millions of dollars. Of this total California produced $15,470,325, or, say, fifteen and a half millions, or a little over fivé-ninths of the total product. The circular also states that the product of 1882 in California was $1,690,351—that is, $1,700,000 less than the product of 1881. ~ This falling off shows the partial result of the anti-mining litigation which has been carried on so_ strenaougly daring the past two years, If the anti-miners have their way aud close the great hydraulic mines, they or any one can also close all other pmines, and. if they succeeded in closTing the hydraulic “mines only, the gold yield of our State, which is one of the principal sources of our prosperity_as a Commonwealth, will be reduced”to probably three — million dollars per annum, and our ¢commuPity -willbe-deprivedof-some twelve) milliong of the royal metals yearly, which all the world is seeking for -and which is absolutely — for commerce, If_ these great Laippcoliicey] mines are closed, it is safe to say all others ‘must also be closed, for we do not believe that one class of gold mining canbe wiped out unless all kinds are served the same way. In tact, we are informed that the Ruby drift mine of Sierra county has been sued and an injunction asked, and if an action*can be maintained there nu drift mine in the State is safe, and by parity of reasoning no quartz mine, for ali ake deposit sediment in the streams, 2Our great ‘State, which has astonished the world with its golden product, and which sustained the nawith its golden aid, will, if the antinikwers ave their way, ‘be relegated } out of the commercial channels “and . its want will be felt severely all . over the world, But in our State it willbe more than in any other, for we will deliberately rob ourselves of 15} millions of gold which is dug out monwealth, A year’s cessation of this flow in San Francisco will be a worse calamity than a typhoon or °a verely felt that hard times willcome which followed the cessation of the silver flow from the Comstock, and from which we were slowly{emerging under the steady yearly flow of the yolden productof our great mines, will surely again come upon us, and this time justly—i. e., if we are foolish enough to lose our mines. We have in our State, as-is well known, the most lucrative and permanent gold mints in the world, yielding fifteen to sixteen millions of gold per year, which will continue for the next ten decades, at least, and which we and the world must have; and yet a few hungry lawyers and a very limited number of rabid antiminers are using every effort in the Courts, Legislature and Congress to strangle this great indugtty, under which we have built up an Empire. If our legislators and our Courts should conclude that mining should cease in our State it will create. such a financial, social and_political crisis as will stir up the “dry bones” of the fossils who think that mining is of no interest or benefit to our people, Tue condition of McFerron, one of the .principals in the prize fight, which. took place at Rochester, . 'BY ener of the A Stock Operator's Suicide. The San Francisco Report of Thursday says: George Osgood, an old and well-known citizen formerly of the firm of: Osgood & Stetson, but who of late ‘has’ been devoting himself to operating i in stocks, shot ‘himself about noon to-day, in the basement of the Stock and Exchange Building, Pine street, _ Shortly before the fatal deed Captain Hobbs noticed the deceased walking up and ddwn’ in the basement opposite the water-closets. At that time he seemed to be suffering from some sort of a fit, and was in a semi-dazed condition, Captain Hobbs apoke to him and asked whether he was sick. The deceased replied that he was. The Captain then took a chair cushion, which happened ‘to be at hand, placed it upon a small heap of kindling wood, by the side of the coalboxes, seated Mr, Osgood upon it and soon afterwards left him. A few moments later a shot was heard and those who. rushed to the spot, found the deceased lying baek where Captain Hobbs had left him. He had shot himeelf in the mouth with a cut-off revolver of large calibre, which was lying on the cushfound. Death was‘almost instantaneous, for when a doctor arrived ten minutes afterward the verdict was: ‘He is dead; his eyes are already sunken,” The deceased was well known in the Board and in the. brokers’ offices and “was once a very wealthy man. . It is not known what his exact cirumatances were to-day] but itis known that he was “long” upon a notorious wild-cat .stock, which numbers its victims already by the “hundred, and which it is quite unnecessary for the Daily Report to mention atthis time. When Mr,__Osgood retired from. the firm above mentionad_he was worth some $300,000. He had been operating in stocks—and. not siecesfully—for some five years, >. The Climate of Alaska.
