The politicians Toughest the Bars
are actively, engaged in arranging the
wires for ‘ the nominations next Fall.
In.the Democratic party there is evirong. d ation to beat
wate hee “4 6 Governor
in his letter mcs “évidently from
his language, much against his-will, to
sacrifice himself for. the good of the
State, end modestly assumes the position of the defender of the people. The
: Reporter evidently don’t like the Governér, and appéars'to be familiar with
his record, “which the same,” it pro—
ceeds to explain, by showing that the
Governor signed every railroad aid bill,
except one, passed by the last Legislature, and in one case a heavy tax was
saddled upon the country to build a
mythical railroad, without even per~
mitting the taxpayers to rote on it.—
Bat “the Governor tras" many friends,
“and they are determined to make the
best fight forhim. They have already
caucassed in Sin Francisco and as we
are -told, “represented nearly every
county in the State.” While Haight .
has many warm friends in his party,
he has also many bitter enemies, who
are ready to form, any combination for
his defeat, Many of these look upon
Congressman Johnson as the most
available man, and“ we are told-that
the forces of Johnson in the north and
McCoppin in the south will unite for
“this purpose, Such —s combination
would be apt-to make it warm for Mr.
Haight, and at least so far contrel the
Convention that some compromise man
-sach as Thomas Fiadley;-of this coun
ty, might step in and carry off the laa_Tels. Certain it is that the Democrats
of this county begin to talk Findley
’ strong sine’ the withdrawal of Watt
from the field, and he will, in allprobability secure the delegation. It is,
however, a long time to the end of the
fight, and the battle front may change
with the Democracy’ before that time.
In the Republican ranks politicians
ate not se active. This is probably owing to the fact that the party has been
beaten in the State, and the leaders
ate more anxious to find the man who
can make tlie best run than to advance
the interests of particular favorites. A
number of good men, such as General
Redington, Eugene Sullivan, Newton
Booth, Pacheco, and others have been
mentioned, andwhile they all have
many friends, they seem to be less eager than the Democrats, in the prelim~
inaries of the campaign. All matters
considered, tlie next contest, in. a local
point of view, is likely to be very interesting. The papers are already.
warming up for the fight, and the people are beginning to feel interested.
After the State Conventions are held
we shall have lively times in politics,
TRIAL ON A CHARGE oF ROBBERY.
There . was a case on trial Thursday
afternoon, investigated before Justice
Paynter, says the Grass Valley Union,
wherein Christopher Stapp was accused
of robbery. It appears that George
Kress was indebted, or supposed to jbe,
to Stapp in the sum of $20, Stapp
‘went to Kress’ place anid demanded
the money at the muzzle of a puzzle or
at the point of some other weapon.
Kress did not produce the money, but
Stapp took away a guitar, two boxes
of tobaceo, a saw and some other ar
ticles. Because Stapp had a pistol or a
knife for a writ of attachment, and because he attempted to make himself
his own court and officer, he was com~
plained of for robbery. . All this hap~
