Mortgage Tax Suits,
Suits have been commenced by District Attorney Caldwell and Judge
Niles, who is em ployed. by the county,
against all parties owhing money sesuits for amounts under $300 have
been commenced before Justice John
Caldwell, of this township, Yesterday
the first suit of this character was commenced in the District Court against
William Eddy. The complaint alleges that the tax amounting to $400
is due .upon $20,000 leaned to H.
Pauliner, secured by notes and mortgages duly é¢xecuted, delievered and
recorded in the County Recorder’s office. These suits will test the constitutionality ofthe law passed by the
last. Legislature exempting money secured by mortgage from taxation.____-. influences.

Whe Raijroad Party.
It is expected that Mr. Harris, the
engineer employed to survey the Ne~
vada, Grass Valley and Marysville
route, will arrive in this city with his:
party to-day. They were to leave
Marysville on Thursday for a reconnoisance of the territory over which
the survey is to be made, the object of
which is to find the must practicable
route by which the.grades can be overcome. Early next week it is expected
that the party will be. ready to take
the field for making the survey in all
its details.
The Nevada Literary Society will
meet at Library Hall this evening.
The preliminary exercises will be interesting, and during the evening Bret
Harte’s “Heathen Chinee,” who “went
for Bill Nye,” will be sung. The San
Domingo annexation question will be

About a week ago the Nevada and
Dutch Flat stage: was robbed Wetween
Little York and Dutch Flat.. From

trank belonging to Judge Brown, of
Brown Bros.’ Mining Claim at You

Judge Brown was.a passenger at, the
