Nevada the county seat of Nev: Joan a the northern terminus the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Rail} goad, and 70 miles northeast of Sacramento, “Sith which city it is connected by rail. It was first settled by whites in 1849, in which year valuable gold mines were discovered on andaround its present site. It was incorporated in 1856, It now has a population 0} 00, and lies on the western slope of the Nevada mountains at an elevation of 2,525 feet above gealevel. It hasone of the best systems of water works in the State, d streets lighted at night with? gus, which is very generally used by citizensas an illuminant, ten schools well graded’ and under efficient management, Fire Depart~ ment consisting of two Companies owning ‘halls, a Theatre capable. of seating 600 people, # military company owning an armory that is frequently tised for dances and public gatherings, numerous revioud and secret organizations, (specified elsewhere in this paper), and_all the other institutions that.are generally found in a “thriving and enterprising city. The community principally derives it supper from the mining industry, hydraulic and quartz being the branches carried Onin the immediate} {magn ‘wainity, while drifting is also pursued tosome extent a few miles distant. The deepest mine is the Providence, now working at depth of over 1,100 feet, and there finding very heavy and rich deposits. In the town‘ghip nearly 200 stamps are busily engaged . er quartz, Stages leave here regu: for all parts of Nevada and Sierra counm ~ ties and Marysville. No brick or stone wall shall be supported upon stringers of wood; arid it shall be unlawful for any person to raise, build upon, or alter any building of brick and stone or both, unless the same is so cémpleted, altered or constructed, as to comply with the provisions of this ordinance, Section 8. It shall be unlawful for any person to smoke hams, bacon, sausages, or any meats whatever in houses, other than brick or stone houses,.with.walls at least twelve inches.in thickness; it shall also be unlawful to construct, use or maintain any chimney or flue attached to, or connected with any structure within the fire limits,-1wnless the same shall be constructed of stone, brick or terra-cotta, from the ground up, said chimney or flue to extend at least three feet above-the roof or outvr wall ‘of said building. Any person who shall violate ny of the provisions of this ordinance, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by a fine of not less than twenty-five dollars; and not exceeding one hundred. dollars, or by imprisonment in the city prison not exceed‘ing ten days, for each offense, at the diseretion of the Justice of the Peace by whom the punishment is assessed.
