A BILL THAT SHOULD PASS.
Setator Nelson has introduced a
bill ‘‘to-regulate the practice of medi¢ine and surgery in the State of
California” which should by all means
be passed, and we hope that the able
legislators of Nevada county will
give it their strongest support. The
law as it now stands is objectionable
in many respects to the people and
profession at large, having been formulated in the interest of a grasping
medical monopoly in San_ Francisco.
, These monopolists possess such power under it as°to declare through
their Board of Examiners, that no
physician or surgeon, whatever his
qualifications may be, shall’ practice
in the State if he-spends money~-in
price 1 Nelson's bill is. based .
entirely upon the credential system,
and‘not only protects the public
from quacks more effectually than
does the old law, but also makes it
quite impossible for one man to sit in
judgment upon anotherin the same
business.

N@ DANGER.
We learn from the Examiner that
thej matter of compromising the
Raifroad Taxes of Placer county by
the Board. of » Supervisors,» being
broughtto the notice of Attorney
General Marshall, evoked from that
_.gentleman the opinion that: the atSoenape who assisted in bringing
about that compromise were liable to
criminal prosecution.
The above appeared in Saturday's
; Placer Herald, which paper has been
¢ opposed to shy compromise. with the
__other county that lias compromised,
or intends to, or else we have been
Marshall’sopinion on the subject. He
is said to be-in favor of settling the
taxes as Nevada sec Placer counties
did,

One of: the cdttimonest delusions
amoug a ceftain. class of Irishmen,
says the Liverpool Courier, is that
their countrymen form a great majority of the soldiers in the British
army, and that itis Irishmen who
win all the battles. According to
the official returns just out, the British army is composed of 124,434 Kaglishmen, 13,723 Scotchmen and 36,945 Irishmen. It is estimated that
over 80 per cent. of the gailors in the
navy are Englishmen, At all events,
it is an overwhelming percentage.
* ‘Tur Marysville Appeal is right for
once when it says: The golden tales

taken with many grains of allowance.
Gold has no doubt been discovered
in Alaska, but that fabulous ‘rich

strongly of a conspiracy in favor of a

“The noblest work Of God is man.”
Who dare dispute it? .Who ever can
That great immortal truth condemn,
Or place us forms that outrank ment
And yet, that “beauty unadorned
Ig most adorned,” by man is spurned;
For ever since that fatal day,
When Adam gave the race away
By Eve induced, whose rarest charms
Ope’d up his eyes to falsealarms,
As he took in the “‘tree of knowledge,”
(No need had he to go to college)
The green-eyed monster on him pressed,
He then his Eve in fig leaves dressed,
As well’s himself. Andsince that slip
The Race is held“in Fashion's grip.
Talent and Art may now combine
To robe the “human form divine,”
And make it what it ought to be,
A thing of beauty—joy to see—
In suite symmetrical and shapely,
Only made by WILLIAM BAILEY,
Gallant knight of the tailor’s shears,
Who cuts at BARRETI’S, without fears
Of ever making one misfit.
A red-hot fact, for never yet
He’s missed it, He’s the ‘‘cutter out, *
Who knows for sure what he’s about,
With other “jours” to help him through,
He'll make the garments good and true.
They'll cut, and stitch, and press, and sew,
For coats do not by magic grow;
They're wrought by busy fingers there,
And every stitch put in with care,
Time and patience. Tender thought
In every-button-hole inwrought
Isee, There ‘n blending harmony
The buttons go in-charmingly;
Then fold above some manly breast,
Who thinks he is supremely_blest
When draped in BARRETP’S suits of style.
Happy thoughts the hours beguile
Ot him who shape or style e’er goes on,
And knows just how to put his clothes on.
Thave no danbt as I am writing,
BARRETT’S suits are so inviting,
That every noble lad in town,
Hearing of our great renown,
Will chafe and fret, nor cannot rest,
Till robed in suit of BARRETI’S best;
Just the shape to wear with ease,
Lines and curves the eye to please.
To one and all who join the chase
To be ahead at BARRETT’S PLACE,
A perfect shapely suit to get,
(BAILEY’S sure to make it fit)
You'll find us where I write this ditty,
46 Broad Street, Nevada “eity.
No other store there will compare it,
