The Nevada haily Transeript. Nevada County Official Press. gic ar Daily, Mondays Excepted, BROWN . & CALKINS. THURSDAY, FEB. 7, 1884, Reon _ PHENOMENAL IGNORANCB. ee Since the Placerville Republican is 20 well posted about mining reservoirs and dams, which it says cen do a possible harm, 1f abandoned, perhaps it will be good enongh to explain how it was that the English reservoir burst its sides and caused 80 much injury to property in the valley.—Sacramento Bee, Permit us to say a word or two on this subject while the Placerville pa: per is getting’ ready to answer. ‘" Abendon the mining reservoirs, and the oceans of water they hold back during the heaviest winter storms, letting it flow down gradually in the dry season, will reach the valleys when least desired and make the anti-miners who have a horror of wet feet hunt their housetops in a hurry. To make this matter plainer, we will give the capacityin cubic feet of some of the artificial lakes: North Bloomfield Company’s,1,050,000,000; Milton Company’s 650,000,000; Euteka Lake Company’s 1,130,000,000; Yubs W. and M. Co.’s, 1,800,000, 000; Omega and Blue Tent Company’s, 300,000,000. As to how the English dam “‘burst its sides,”as our brilliant contemporary says, let it hire some experienced dam-wrecker to explode a few pounds of giant powder under the building -it calls home, and watch the effect from a safe distance. It woald then quit asking silly questions as to how the English reservoir broke. LPT EN HTT OK A Sax Dominco paper, El Propagador, advocates the finterference of the Government in the excavations now being carried on where the city of Vega Real-once stood. This city was engulfed at 9 a.m. on the 20th of April, 1564. It is’ related that it sank right into the earth, andthe place where the city once stood is now known as Las Trembladeras, or the ‘quaking swamp.” It was handsomely constructed, and the inhabitants were said to be wealthy and given to indulgence in luxury. A mint existed at the town and coined money for home use. In view of the great difficulty of getting labor performed in hot-and malarious regions, it san scarcely be ex: pected that the work of excavating the ruins will be carried on with much vigor. Democratic predictions are num~erous that Ohio will go Republican this year, on account of the scandal of the Senatorial contest, but the Cleveland Leadér warns the Repubicans not to be deluded by such Jalk. It asserts that the Democrattic party has never been so well organized in that Stateas now, and that however much kicking there may be against the new machine and the new bosses, the party -will fall in solidly behind them when election day comen. The leader believes that only by wise counsel and hard, unceasing labor-can Qhio be made Republican. A Man by the name of Taylor, who has aranch six miles west of the head of cattle creek, in Colorado, is building an enclosure which will contain over 3,000 acres, fur the purpose of raising deer and elk for Eastern market, as curiosities for parks, etc. The fence is to be sixteen feet high. He expects to complete the park by next Fall, in time to catch the deer and elk as they come from the mountains, He will leave gates over the trails, and is confident he can catch all he. wants. Mr. Taylor says young elk or dee: will sell readily in the East for $100. We P. "Barn won Miss Frisca Havertield of Cincinnati; but she is only fourteen, whereas the law in _ Ohio-requires that the bride shall be over eighteen. years of age. Her ingenuity, however, overcame this impediment in tne way of her marriage. She put the figures 18 in to her shoe, and as she stood to anawer the cle k's question she quietly said: “I am over éighteen.” The masriage license was granted, and the pair are hiding from an irate mother. Tux ‘favorite Boston weapon for atreet use just néw is the ‘‘paralyzer,” a leather club seven and one half inches long, with a spriog running through it, andthe end loaded with iron. You carry your hand in ‘your coat pocket with a paralyzer * fastened to the wrist, and you can knock a garroter senseless without trouble. But the garrctera also Luy them, aud Boston promises to be a chcice residence city if the thing goes on. _ Or all Oriental carpets the Persian are by far the best, and the test of a troe Persian is that used by the natives themselves, namely, to drop a piece of red-hot charcoal upon it. This leaves a singed round spot. If “the carpet is a good one of the first quality, the hand can then brash off the singed wool without the least trace of the burn being afterward ‘discernable, : It was not the fame of Mr. Sul‘Tivan’s pogilistic skill that drew ont 1: 6,000 San Franciscans to receive him. It wes the announcement that be was from Boston. ms “mine ohana in Great Britain has DR. E. B. For upwards of twenty-five years Dr. Lighthill’s professional attention. has been exclusively devoted to the relief and cure of these important ailments and it ie with pardonable pride that he refers*to the success which he has achieved in this special deHis method of treatment is original and partment of medical science, based upon the most approved acientific principles which his apparatus and appliances for the examination and treatment of the hidden cavities of the head, throat and air passages, are confessedly the most perfect of anything of the kind yet devised, enabling him not only to readily discover the exact nature of the complaint, but also to direct his appliéations to the diseased parts so effectually that relief is experienced at once, and permanent cures are often effected in the most stubborn and aggravated cases. And it is one of the happy features of his practice that the applications cause neither pain nor distress, and can therefore be readily administered to the most timid or nervous person. In the interest of science, Dr. Lighthill hereby extends a cordia juvitation to the medical profession, members of the press, aciciehiate, and all interested iv the subject, to come and investigate his methods and A candid opinion will invariably be given as to the probabilities of s cure, and no: case will be accepted’ for treatment which does not offer a reasonable chance of success, 2 Xo (Editorial from the Sacramento Record-UnADVANCE IN MEDICAL SCIENCE, ‘ “Knowledge is power,” ssid the wise man 20. often quoted, . and the o trath of which truism was a peitatily never more applicable than in the investigation and treatment of diseaser, A visit yesterday to the office-rooms of Dr. ‘Lightbill, whose articles in the Record-Union upon deafness and diseases. of the throat and lungs have no doubt been recently perused by all our readers, was well repaid by witnessing the advances in medical science and medical appliances which have been made Phe instruments which the doctor brings to within the past few years. his aid in pxamination of these diseases enables, through the use of reflecting glasses, etc, almost as complete and ‘perfect a view of the interior of the passages and organs of the head, ear and throat, had of the exterior surface of the as can be head. The method of treatment of any derangement or disease of any of these parts, or the lungs, is no less direct or simple, for with an endless variety of instruments for local treatment of these hidden passages and organs, medicated spray, vapor or finest powdered remedies are applied without tho least difficulty 6r annoyance to the patient. A visit of inspection was made yesterday to the rooms of Dr. E. B. Li.hthill, a noted physician of New York, who is specially engaged in the treatment of catarrh and diseases of the eye, throat, ear and nasal organs. In his rooms we found a variety of delicate appliances used treating them mildly with proper and painless remedial liquids, vapors and powders, as the case may require. Varied and well adapted instruments for removing obstacles from the throat were shown; and the separate use of each explained. One'portion of the apparetus contains a atrong reflected shows the cavity of the throat, or by which any cavity oan be seen, and treated successfully, and by the aid of mirrors the vocal organs are plainly viewed. During the visit Dr, Lighthill was able to illustrate very aneogeatally by operations upon two patients who declared they had been much relieved bythe treatment.
