_ PHENOMENAL IGNORANCB.

Since the Placerville Republican
is 20 well posted about mining reservoirs and dams, which it says cen do
a possible harm, 1f abandoned, perhaps it will be good enongh to explain how it was that the English
reservoir burst its sides and caused
80 much injury to property in the
valley.—Sacramento Bee,
Permit us to say a word or two on
this subject while the Placerville pa: per is getting’ ready to answer.
‘" Abendon the mining reservoirs, and
the oceans of water they hold back
during the heaviest winter storms,
letting it flow down gradually in the
dry season, will reach the valleys
when least desired and make the anti-miners who have a horror of wet
feet hunt their housetops in a hurry.
To make this matter plainer, we will
give the capacityin cubic feet of
some of the artificial lakes: North
Bloomfield Company’s,1,050,000,000;
Milton Company’s 650,000,000; Euteka Lake Company’s 1,130,000,000;
Yubs W. and M. Co.’s, 1,800,000, 000;
Omega and Blue Tent Company’s,
300,000,000. As to how the English
dam “‘burst its sides,”as our brilliant
contemporary says, let it hire some
experienced dam-wrecker to explode
a few pounds of giant powder under
the building -it calls home, and
watch the effect from a safe distance.
It woald then quit asking silly questions as to how the English reservoir
broke.

A Sax Dominco paper, El Propagador, advocates the finterference of
the Government in the excavations
now being carried on where the city
of Vega Real-once stood. This city
was engulfed at 9 a.m. on the 20th
of April, 1564. It is’ related that it
sank right into the earth, andthe
place where the city once stood is
now known as Las Trembladeras, or
the ‘quaking swamp.” It was
handsomely constructed, and the inhabitants were said to be wealthy
and given to indulgence in luxury.
A mint existed at the town and
coined money for home use. In
view of the great difficulty of getting labor performed in hot-and malarious regions, it san scarcely be ex:
pected that the work of excavating
the ruins will be carried on with
much vigor.
Democratic predictions are num~erous that Ohio will go Republican
this year, on account of the scandal
of the Senatorial contest, but the
Cleveland Leadér warns the Repubicans not to be deluded by such
Jalk. It asserts that the Democrattic party has never been so well organized in that Stateas now, and
that however much kicking there
may be against the new machine
and the new bosses, the party -will
fall in solidly behind them when
election day comen. The leader believes that only by wise counsel and
hard, unceasing labor-can Qhio be
made Republican.
A Man by the name of Taylor, who
has aranch six miles west of the
head of cattle creek, in Colorado, is
building an enclosure which will
contain over 3,000 acres, fur the
purpose of raising deer and elk for
Eastern market, as curiosities for
parks, etc. The fence is to be sixteen feet high. He expects to complete the park by next Fall, in time
to catch the deer and elk as they
come from the mountains, He will
leave gates over the trails, and is
confident he can catch all he. wants.
Mr. Taylor says young elk or dee:
will sell readily in the East for $100.
We P. "Barn won Miss Frisca
Havertield of Cincinnati; but she is
only fourteen, whereas the law in
_ Ohio-requires that the bride shall be
over eighteen. years of age. Her ingenuity, however, overcame this impediment in tne way of her marriage.
She put the figures 18 in to her shoe,
and as she stood to anawer the cle k's
question she quietly said: “I am
over éighteen.” The masriage
license was granted, and the pair are
hiding from an irate mother.
Tux ‘favorite Boston weapon for

a troe Persian is that used by the
natives themselves, namely, to drop
a piece of red-hot charcoal upon it.
This leaves a singed round spot. If

& SKILLED SPKCTALIET.
A visit of inspection was made
yesterday to the rooms of Dr. E. B.
Li.hthill, a noted physician of New
York, who is specially engaged in
the treatment of catarrh and diseases
of the eye, throat, ear and nasal
organs. In his rooms we found a
variety of delicate appliances used
treating them mildly with proper
and painless remedial liquids, vapors
and powders, as the case may require. Varied and well adapted instruments for removing obstacles
from the throat were shown; and
the separate use of each explained.
One'portion of the apparetus contains

by which any cavity oan be seen,
and treated successfully, and by the
aid of mirrors the vocal organs are
plainly viewed. During the visit
Dr, Lighthill was able to illustrate
very aneogeatally by operations upon
two patients who declared they had
been much relieved bythe treatment. Itis evident that the doctor
loves the atudy to which he has devoted thirty years of his life, and
that he is one in whom every containly a scientific specialist.
