A vaGUE rumor was ‘floating around town Tuésday evening that Thorn, the murderer and stage robber, had committed suicide at San Quentin prison, or at least mode an attempt in that direction. As the story went, laudunum was the means he adopted to hasten his: re-union with Collins in the devil’s domains. Diligent inquiry has so far failed to substantiate the statement, and there is probably no foundation for it. The columns of the TRANSCRIPT are open to him Herald to task for ite ‘ill-advised and you will be well again. NEVADA COUNTY, ited Rebake for Its ignorance. The Grass Valley Union of yesterday says: Since the Sawyer decision the Sacramento Bee has been quite patronizing toward Nevada county in advising the people thereofas to what are their best intereste—to give up ail idea of hydraulic mining, and devote their energies to the cultivation of fruit and grapes and the manufacture of wine. At the same time the Bee undertakes.to read the local press here a lecture in continuing to advocate the cause of the miners, instead of setting forth the advantag-s of the county in the Tine of viticultural products. The Bee affects more knowledge than it possesses of what it’ presumes to speak of in this connection, The hydraulic mining sections of the county that are to be injuredby Judge Sawyer’s decision, will not recoup by the culture of fruit or the vine, as generally this section is so elevated that the late frosts.would be an effectual bar to such enterprises. Quartz mining may to some extent take. its place, but not viticulture. In the @entral portion of the county, in the townships of Nevada and Grass Valley, hydraulic mining hasbeen a small interest, (as tu the last named virtually nothing), but quartz mining: of large importance. In this portion of the county fruit and vine growing has been cond:icted for many years, asalsoin the lower beuch of the foot-hills, where little mining of any kind has ever been carried on. This last named region is adapted to «tiversified farming, grazing and fruit culture, and such is and has beeu for many years, the occupation of the people: In the eastern portion 18 the high mountain region, which is adapted to neither mining or agriculture, and then the Truckee bazin, which is va‘uable for its great lumber resourses, The county comprises a territory that rieee from the low lands of the valley to the summitof the Sierras, 6,000 feet in hight. The portious adapted to the different industries of mining, agriculture, viticulture, grazing and lumbering are well known. That portion devoted to mining has drawn the largest population and there the most vapital has been invested. Hydraulic mining, in the building of expensive reservoirs and canals, has caused the greatest outlay, and this is the capital that is to be lost by the Sawyer decision. It amounts to millione of dollars, and the products of the soil in this particular portion of the county can wever replace the loss. Of the lower section of the county including Nevada and Grass Valley townships, the land has great capabilities in the way of fruit and vine culture, and the local press, while always recognizing mining as the dominant interest, has never failed in calling attention to the valueof the lands for these products, And that these efforts have not been without avail is evident, as at this time there is but litile land in the foothills of the county susceptible of cultivation, that is not occupied, aad in process of improvement. If the Bee has any further advice to give, its editor should travel through the county and beceme enabled to write more intelligently. Soe Table of Altitudes. For years past the rock has been extremely hard, and progress in driving drifts was necessarily slow. Three and one-half feet per week has been about as much as the miners could drive. Week beforelast the distance driven in the 13-level was nine feet and last week it was 12 feet. The ore looks much better than it has for a long time. The Slate Ledge Quartz Mining Company are meeting with success. The company are only prospecting, and there are only two or three owners, Since May last something in the neighborhood of $7,000 has been taken from tnis claim and last month a dividend of $600 was declared. The contractors who have been sink the shaft 50 feet deeper at the Imperial mine, have completed their work, and another contract has been let for sinking 50 feet further. The ledge is looking well inthe bottom, and is gradually improving as depth is attained. The Pennsylvania Consolidated Mining Company have issued a prospectus which shows clearly the history of that mine. : bought the mines, but soon afterward ascertained that they were ut. ’ terly worthless. Coulter now sues Janin for $336,742, alleging that he made the report of the mines being rich with a fraudulent intent. Parties at Grass Valley. To-morrow evening is the date fixed upon by the Athletic base ball club for giving their second anovual ball at Empire Hall, Grass Valley. The young gentlemen will entertain their friends royally, as they always do on such occasions. We believe it is the intention of some Nevada City dancers to go down and take part in the affair. They can rest assured that they will have a good time. The Fire Department of Grass Valley will have their ninth annual ball on the evening of the 221 instant.
