“night past aainle fin ‘she’ city ‘were:
—~pung, notifying our citizens that there was .
& fire, although, notwithstanding the terqrifie noise the bells the’ aforesaid
see. were Joth to. believe that there was:
anything worth getting out « of warm beds.
~ for, as-nolight could be'seen, and it was.a .
bitter cold night. The bells were sounded
= second and third times, and finally .
“warm beds” were soon -empty;-and the
streets filled with people enquiring“ Where
is the fire?” co which’ enquiry ‘the invariable answer was steamboat.” ”. No -fire being
»-diseovered the excitement was soon over,
people's noses began ‘to get cold, and in a
short time the streets resumed their dull
state. Well, the fire it seemis, occurred.in
‘Niman’s blacksmith Shop, and was of very
short duration, ‘
Aatoriitn CHINESE. THter.—A. Chinaman named Ah Soupladie, visited the auction. room of H. M. Levy on Wednesday
evening _last,.and after examining the
various kinds of -goods, concluded that he
needed a pair of pants, asthose he had on
were somewhat soiled.. Soupladle saw a
pair that suited him in color, size, &&., and
without saying anything to. Mr. Lary or
Keller he tucked them under his coat and .
marched out, forgetting to pay for the“un-mentionables.”. Some one in the crowd
saw him “nip” the pants, and. he was soon
_ in charge'of Officer Scott; who placed him
in the ten-foot building, on Broad street.—
He was brought before Judge Kendall yesterday morning, tried, and we presume he .
was convicteg, although we did not goand
ascertain, as one peep at him convinced us
that he was oe, as charged in the
indictment,”
Narrow Escare.—John Hahn, a member of Pennsylvania Engine Company ,No.
2, had a narrow escape of being seriously
injured on Wednesday night last. Hahn:
being a, good fireman, was promptly on
hand when the alarm of fire was given,
and while. assisting. in taking the hose
carriage to the place where the fire was,
came in contact with themachineand was
thrown down, the carriage passing, over
him. © He is rather sore ‘but will be all
right again in a few days.
Prick LowERED.—We published an.
item the other day stating that the miners
of Birchville and vicinity were on a strike
in consequence of the high price of water. We learn that the Eureka Lake
Water Co. have reduced the price from 16}
cents an inch, to 12} cents. That portion
of the number who. were.on a strike to
have the price of water reduced to 12}
cents an inch have commenced operations,
while those that shriad on haad 10 Lassen a8
inch still hold out:
shores sow store is to be erected
immediately « on the old site of the St.Louis
Hotel, Commercial street: This Jot has
been’ an eye-Sore for the past three years,
as it is situated on one of the most. public
thoroughfares of the city..We learn that
when it is completed a new crockery ware
store willbe started.
zs ‘Lors Wanrep: —There never was ‘a
time when’ vacant lots’ within the: city
limits were in such great demand as at the,
presetit'time. Good-sized lots, for residen.
ces, cannot be found on. Broad, Main or
