4 AALS, Ramee ta terete eee ner ee . copperheads have uo sympathy with the . Gwin enterptisé in Mexico. If these proMonroe Doctrine are honest? — _ Brown knows as well, aye better than many Indians and prowliyg bands of Mexican desc — evade Drily. Granseript, fossions are honest; why is it that Gwin, the old charlatan, is puffed by its kind? Why are these copperhead journals filled with praises of the country over which Gwin is made ruler? Why are the facts misrepresented and every effort made to induce men to emigrate to that territory, if those who profess so much attachment for thé Beriah other men, that one of the -requirements: made ot settlers in Gwindom is that they should give allegiance to the Mexican usurpation. The country. is filled with hostile perados. Protection can neither be~given ~ ‘This territory has new been annexed to the _ papers of its ilk are endeavoring to advance ''/ the interests. of Gwin. Gwin to hia settlers, law andorder will prevail in Arizona. In this territory emigrants can live under their own. free government.— Again, there is danger of trouble between the United States and the Maxiyiillian government. In such a contingency, all who settled in Gwindom ‘willhave either to take” & “up arms against the flag or lose all they have acquired in that territory. ‘While scoring the Administration for not enforcing the Monroe Doctrine by war, the Press and idea is, not to defend tlieir neighbors in the right of self government, but to resist for-4 eign intervention because it-conflicts with Yankee domination.” Following this are a number of false statements in regard to the pelicy of the Waion party which are so baseleas as to garry refutation on the face of them. The Aduinistration’ has ever been the enemyof oppression and of usurpation. Were not interests of far greater importance demanding our attention at home, the Mexican designs of Maximillian would have long ago been thwarted. Our Government must first. trample down the usurpations of Davis his associates. We must first crush 'the rebellion at home and then we can see that the interests of the oppressed are consulted in other countries. We have no: doubt-that the copperheads would rejoice to see the strength of the Government divided by a “contest with France, it would increase the chances of success of rebellion. The Press would love to see a return of old times when. Gwin ruled this.State, and it would“rejoice at the success not only of Maximillian in Mexico, but the annexation of California to Gwin’s dominions : President, recently, importining the release of their husbands, held as prisoners of war on Johnson's Island In the course of the conversation the President said: to one of' the ladies, who laid great stress upon her husband being a religious man: “You say your husband is a religious man. ‘Tell him judge of religion, but that in my 6pitiion, the religion that sets men to turn traitors and fight against their Government, because, as théy think, the Government does not suffioiéntly help some men to eat bread by the sweat of other men's faces, is not the sort of religion: by which people will get to heaven.” ne THE First Maine Cavalry is armed with the Spencer sixteen-shooter, a weapon the rebels declare is wound up on Sunday atid gees off during the week as many times ay, we wish it. ; a A FIRE which broke out in the Virginia subdued by the Departmext, before any mnaterial injury had been done.
